Why do you tempt me so?

So, what is out there in smaller then PSD/Dmax/Cummins sizes that is very swappable? 4BT's don't count either. Wish GM would get off their dead butts and produce that 4.5L V6 diesel that already passed most of the pre-production hurdles.
The Isuzu diesel I believe is a little smaller than the 4bt. Came in NPR box trucks. Very cool motor.
In reply to Ranger50:
I think about this a lot. I lived in Germany for a few years, and enjoyed some tax-payer funded Middle Eastern vacations, and so I know that just about every automaker has a range of diesel motors overseas. A swap to some other market's diesel motor would probably be fairly easy from a mechanical standpoint b/c so many cars sold in the US would share motor mounts and bell-housing bolt patterns with European or Asian cousins.
But, I hesitate at the thought of trying to DD a motor that was never sold in the US. How long would it take to get a diesel-specific part when I need it to drive to work on Monday?
I'd love to have an FJ80 Land Cruiser with a Toyota turbo diesel under the hood.
There is a local S10 running a 4bt, so it can't be that bad to swap in, pretty quick little truck, too.
There is a guy on Superturbodiesel swapping a OM617 into a Ranger.

Dear Ford,
Bring the United States of America the new version of the Ranger that the rest of the world will be getting. You know the one with the little diesel engine.
Thank you,
Everyone one.
the mechanical injected ALH VW TDI motor is probably your best bet for refinement/available parts and mpg's in a light truck. chipped/injectors/turbo/etc. all will up the workhorse possibilities.
I've often thought if my TDI Golf ever gets smashed up, I'll buy it back and build a truck out of the drivetrain, then go get another commuter car.
