I'm planning on going from the somewhat heavy stock 17x7.5 wheels to a set much lighter (like 17x8, 17x8.5, 18x8, 18x8.5). I would like to reduce unsprung weight as much as possible, but noticed some 18 inch wheels sets that weighed almost the same and look better on my 9th gen sedan.
My question is can my ride quality as-is remain the same, get better, or get worse if I go with a lightweight 18 set? As-is is kinda on the firm side as it is, and I'm planning on throwing on a bigger rear bar.
Tire selection can have a pretty big effect. I used to have a set of 14" wheels with the OG Azenis on them that rode worse than 17s with 300TW Kumhos. Both fairly light, it was all up to the tire sidewall construction.

In reply to Keith Tanner :
If that's the case, I plan to run the Falken FK460s with 50 aspect ratio (maybe 45).
I wasn't a fan of the every day harshness of my 2011 328xi and didn't really want to go with 18's but for some reason I did anyway. I was pleasantly surprised it didn't appreciably affect the ride quality but maybe a lot of that was the tires I chose? Either way I wouldn't think that moving up one inch in size would make much of a difference...
Road conditions play a key role. Big wheels can get septadecagonal...

If you're running all season tires, I wouldn't sweat wheel weight too much...
