GF's 2014 Nissan Rogue (44k miles) whines under hard acceleration. Is this normal? Or is this something that should be addressed?

CVTs just don't accelerate.......
But seriously, not sure if it's a regular thing, but the awful loaner Impreza I had a couple weeks ago had CVT and IIRC it had a bit of a whine to it. Then again, I daily a tuned WRX so I tend to ignore a LOT of noises I hear lol.
I would get it into Nissan while under warranty and get the issue looked at. Nissan has had some CVT issues in the past.
Well, they can cause the driver and passengers to whine, but that’s mostly due to their droning nature and lack of acceleration ;)
Anyway, id have it checked out since it could be the transaxle or an alternator, etc.
Ok, so it sounds like it's normal for it to sound bad. Haha.
She's got a Carmax warranty on it, so I guess rather than taking it in for them to say, "We can't duplicate the noise," since it's intermittent, we'll just wait for it to E36 M3 the bed, or at least get to the point that the car doesn't move.
"whines under hard acceleration"
Sadly it may also be normal. I know the DSM's have some seemlier issues.
If you have a solenoid failure you can also have some new sounds.
Good news. If it is under recall or warranty. You get a new one.
The Subie I had didn't whine AND it accelerated quite well. it worked so well I really wanted another.
My son has a 2007 Sentra CVT. We drove it from Chicago to LA five years ago. On a hot day and a fully loaded car it would whine going up steep inclines. (25,000 miles on it)
Last month I drove it back from LA to Chicago fully loaded by myself an noticed on a hot day going up mountains the whine is still there but goes away on the flat parts. Sometimes a whine under hard acceleration. (Now has 52,000 miles on it)
Whine? Yes. Back in 2011 I read Nissan was having CVT issues with these Sentra’s and the dealer told me Nissan extended the warranty til 2017.

I think CVTs are still recovering from the fact that most of the early ones were attached to some pretty boring engines. When you drive a CVT hooked to a decently powerful engine and it just goes up to its happy spot and stays there, it's pretty impressive.
My initial terrible impression of a CVT was on a Dodge Caliber. If you were trying to get out from a parking lot into a gap in tight traffic you basically had to floor it while there were still two cars that needed to pass you so you could get out in time. I cant put to words how much i hated that. On the other hand, there was a certain speed range where it would accelerate far better than you would ever expect by looking at its specs. I think modern CVTs are getting more of the good and less of the bad as time goes on.
There are also types of transmissions that act like CVTs but sort of arent, like the Toyota hybrids. My old GS450h did 0-60 in 5.2 seconds and the traction control bothered me a lot more than the lag time ever did. But it also saved my ass a few times on wet roads flooring it from 50mph when you forget that the car would break loose at those speeds.
