I am replacing the axles and lower control arms for a neighbor in this 2010 Nissan rogue. I had expected to preload the suspension before I tightened the arms but as I look at it I can't see how it would make any difference.

I would say no but if I was doing it I would do it anyway. Especially if it was not my car.

Agreed.  There's nothing you are tightening that will lock in the wrong place.

Thanks for the responses.  It's nice to have my thoughts confirmed - shows I'm not completely losing it. 
 

I scanned a YouTube video of a shop doing this to have an idea of what I was getting into and they spent a lot of time getting the balljoint pinch bolt out and then separating the balljoint.  And then some time and special tools to remove one of the axles.

i was fearful going in but celebrated the joys of life away from snow and rust as the bolts and the joint and the axle all came out like the car had just come off of the assembly line.

Dropping a wrench on those toes will really hurt.
