My question is more the layout- is it a rear engine with the trans in front of it, rear engine with the trans as part of it more like a FWD car), or something different than that?

Rear engine, think inline-4 hanging on a VW Beetle type transmission. The engine cants 30 degrees to one side. Stock it's listed at 58 HP. It even has swing axles. According to my "World Cars 1983" by the Italian Auto Club it is less than 2000 lb from the factory.
We could have a sub-class for the Challenge called "Commie class". A bike engine Trabant, this Skoda, surely someone could find a Wartburg. Some Canadians might be able to drum up a Lada, or Dacia. There might be a couple more I'm missing.
Edit: How could I forget a GRM fan favourite, the Yugo !
Didn't Skoda make tanks? Not sure of the drivetrain layout...

I encourage you to proceed much the same as I cheer for the dumb blonde in the slasher movie to go into the creepy basement...It's what I am here to see happen!
What could possibly go wrong?
Interesting. I'd heard the transmission is weak. Unlikely to find a cache of replacements.
Engine sits behind trans.
