They weren't much fun to drive. I'd pass.

This is actually true, most Mercedes of this era are built for comfort and speed but not sporting. In order to be composed and comfy at 150 mph they are not tight when you try to drive twisty's aggressively. It's a trade off though, great cruisers.

My wife wants one.

Safe for the Era. Dependable for the most part. Relatively affordable for what you get. No so sporty that she hates it.

probably just a set of bushes, uprated shocks and EFI swap  away from being a perfect car

To be fair, that was with completely knackered KYBs. I replaced them with Bilsteins which vastly improved things.

A friend has put a lot of effort into making a 560SL the perfect Lemons racer. It's got big brakes, cheaty springs and shocks, EFI, fresh suspension all around, 50/50 weight balance, and yet is still a mid pack car.

But that's a racecar. It's very comfy, and pleasant even on track.

Made back when Mercedes was making good cars, looks nice, decent power, dismal mileage, and uninspiring handling. Nice looking for a boulevardier, poor choice if you value crisp handling fun on winding roads.

If I didn't have my car, a euro light bumper conversion 560 would be the best choice.  Don't handle great on worn out suspension, but new bilsteins, stiffer sway bars, wide tires, etc, they can be fun.  Mine runs pretty well, I have been using marvel oil in the gas and I think it helps lube up the injection parts.
