I won't say definitely not because I've seen some pretty strange things, but no. They have a flex plate and a torque converter.
That's what I thought too, asked the mechanic and he said no it's a flywheel. I got an estimate to fix my starter which was $1,100 because the flywheel needs to be replaced. Sounds to me though that if the starter chewed up anything it's the flex plate, which is cheaper. Also there's always the option of tuning my engine to another timing so the worn out contact between the starter and flex plate are at another location.
That's semantics and I'll let that slide.
The idiot part is this:
"Also there's always the option of tuning my engine to another timing so the worn out contact between the starter and flex plate are at another location."
I'm trying to fathom exactly what this means. The bad spot in the ring gear will always be there. Did he mean take it off and reclock it (will require minimum of drilling, possibly plug-welding) which will be at least as much as replacing the component, and will accomplish absolutely nothing, or what exactly?
Some cars have the starter ring gear on the torque converter, and there is a flex plate on the crankshaft. When the ring gear is on the flex plate, I've heard it called both a flywheel and flex plate.
Easy way to find out Engine parts diagram Sometimes the google is your friend..
What's nice is a lot of cars out there with manual transmissions use flexplates and cassette clutch assemblies. That way there's only one engine for the assembly line.
