Do we like Mitsubishi SUVs

These seem to be bargains compared with other Japanese and Korean (and even domestic) SUVs. Nissans have the CVT which I'm not excited about.

I know Mitsubishi makes some badass AWD cars.. how are their SUV's - let's say model year 2016 and newer?

I love Mitsubishi from the 80s and 90s, but having seen the quality of their latest vehicles,  I'll pass.

Mitsubishi does not sell nice vehicles, they sell financing. The vehicle is just the hook.

Which was '01-'05.

I had a '01 and it was nice and a bargain.  

I fear their modern stuff but GRM wrote a nice review recently on Mitsu's largest SUV (the name escapes me.)

I thought the Outlander from a few years back was a nice simple design for a crossover compared to everything else that's kind of over stylized, I believe there was a regular gas version but also a plug in hybrid. I had a neighbor who got a ton of trouble free miles out of a 1st gen Outlander but those cars are probably 20 years old at this point. If the car is 2016 and newer, it probably has some sort of warranty available, so drive one and see what you think. Mitsubishi has a kind of also-ran image in America but that doesn't automatically make their products bad.

Isn't the newest Outlander a rebadged Nissan Rogue?

Same platform, but that's not saying much. Very far from just a rebadge. 

I've had good experiences with 1st and 2nd generation Pajeros (Montero/Raider). Never been in a Mitsubishi SUV later than the mid-1990s, so I can't help you there. 

Older Kia Sorentos (IIRC) were the last nice Mitsubishi SUVs.  3.5l Mitsubishi V6, whole thing may have been a Montero built under license.

Every rental Mitsubishi I've had recently has been a terrible penalty box.

First gen Sorento. The Hyundai version of that engine sucked. That generation got good when they started using the 3.8 Lambda. 

I wound up driving a friend's Outlander for several hours, mostly on the highway. It was a stick shift model. The experience was excruciating. I didn't think anyone still made cars as gutless as an Isuzu Trooper, but Mitsubishi does. I'd rather drive a rusty XJ Cherokee any day.

I bought my one and only Mitsubishi in 2009 just because it was a wagon. It's been great, enough that I sold the Subaru WRX wagon that I bought to replace it. it's now my son's daily, but I'll never buy another one. 

ReconMom and ReconDad owned a 2013 Outlander. Not quite enough room for them, but otherwise a very dependable and zippy little SUV.
