50 years ago the speed limits were 70-75mph in most places.  No daytime speed limits in some areas.

Very true, the 55 mph speed limit wasn't enacted until after the oil embargo of 1974.  IIRC the only reason most states complied is that the feds tied compliance to the distribution of highway maintenance funds.

IMO yes they do mostly. I firmly believe that regardless of the safety equipment in the car people would still be driving distracted due to cell phones, putting on makeup/shaving/eating breakfast in the cars, etc. Also drunk driving.

Even for an attentive driver, they can be helpful. This morning blind spot monitoring saved me from a wreck. I passed a semi on the left and when I went to pull back over to the middle lane some one had come flying round the semi to the right and was in my blind spot. The indicator went off and I was able to pull out of it.

There is one place I don't think they help and that is with modern infotainment centers and touchscreens. Those to me are much more distracting then the old school setups.

This might be a odd reference but when ever I watch a Star Wars flight action, it's hard for me to believe that humans ( I guess you exclude the Jedi's) can fly something that is incredibly fast even with all the nannies. Imagine someone 50 years ago cruising at 70mph+ on the highway, people are more in a rush now. I don't think it's the nannies, I think most humans have not evolved to handle the speed and need to slow down. Plus think about all the technology that distracts everyone. It's Dunkin Donuts and McDonalds fault laugh

Are you sure?  Has his Midi-chlorian count been tested?
