Every winter I pull the nose off my miata and rinse out my winter cooler with paint thinner to get that little bit of oil on the bottom out. Am I just wasting my time?

It's probably from crankcase blowby through the PCV, so the oil will be present when running regardless. Might be a good idea to put some sort of drain valve on the end tanks if you're seeing a lot of it though.

Strange, I was literally just doing this on my miata. Had a very thin film at the bottom, which is totally normal

Are you running the stock PCV system piped into the intake?  You could probably write a book on this subject but the stock system leaks a lot of boost, slowing spool. A lot of people cap off the passenger side vent, and vent the driver side through a catch can to atmosphere.

It's an NC so the pcv is buried under the IM but yes it's connected as stock with the valve cover breather open to air. I've been told to keep the PCV valve functioning for ring health, not sure if there's any truth to that.
