We traded in our Mazda 3 lease for a Mazda cx-5. Both were automatics fully loaded. I felt they handled very similar, the main difference was the brakes as Cx-5 is heavier and higher on the ground. They are comfortable for a taller and heavier guy 6'2" 235lbs. Because it is a lease we have had zero issues. MPG are point on. I haven't towed with it, I have used sport mode before not a huge difference. It actually is smaller in length then the Mazda 3, but has far more room. I am happy with it and we plan on getting another Cx-5 lease.

The 2.5 FWD is pretty good. For an n/a four the skyactiv is surprisingly torquey.. I guess its the compression. The top end isn't so hot. The characteristics are completely the opposite as one of these eee-lag 2.0t motors that pull well on top. It is responsive, torquey and flattens off up top. Also the mazda 2.5t is this same way but even more extreme. Gobs of low rpm power with a flat top end.
Keep in mind this is from somebody who grew up on 80's and 90's cars so 185hp does great for me. And the cx5 has a reasonable price and mpg so it wouldn't be fair to compare it to a Macan turbo or something like that. Mall crawling poser its not. I don't really get where you see that.. Its just a car with improved visibility due to its higher seats.

I like an Edge as much as the next guy but the real problem with it is that the Lincoln version exists. Because, once you've decided that the better driver's car is not top priority, you're pretty much straight to "there's nothing about an Edge that's not better in an MKX". Unless it's too expensive, i guess. I think any 2011-up MKX is a pretty nice place to be.
Vigo, I think you're right. Especially because the Lincolns (I think) have ventilated seats, which I (ashamedly) like. But it does push into a different price range.

I would test drive the lincoln version and see if that fixes your qualms.
