Every time I'm behind one it looks as if it's got a fluid cooler of some sort peeking out from underneath the rear bumper. I'm curious.

It’s a diffuser(?) and part of the muffler. Jalopnik recently had a post about it.

That grill out back always throws me off as well.

It's an aero device to get the air off the muffler and keep it from wrapping around and up into the rear bumper where it causes drag.

Cool. I've seen them and wondered what they were as well, but vy the time I'd get home I'd forget exactly which SUV to search for since in my mind there are only four SUVs. Small, medium, large and Jeeps.
