Hindsight is always 20/20 isn't it? The knee-jerk reaction is to say this guy is an idiot, but reading the article, it sounds like it's a lot easier to wind up on a trail that looks like an ORV trail and it turn into this situation than one would think.
Moral of the story is to thoroughly research your route even if you're on an "adventure." I'd be a good percentage of Matt's Offload Recovery's jobs are people who planned poorly or not at all.
That would explain all the abandoned cars you see rotting away in the Colorado Mountains. There are a lot of them in a creek bed on the road between Golden and Central City. It would cost too much to pull them up the side of the cliff they drove off, so they leave them there.
My bonehead Brother in Law got a towing bill of about $1,000 for getting his Land Cruiser out of a similar adventure. Part of the bill was for tow trucks number 2 and 3 getting the first tow truck unstuck.

Is that an off road Corvair Lakewood Wagon?!?

Sort of. There's not much corvair left other than the shell. Front engine LS.

Yup. It's a good channel. Give it a look.
CO 4x4 rescue group handled something similar in July (not quite as bad, actual road rather than hiking trail). Amateur volunteers start with planning and math. Professionals skip it and go straight to experience and TLAR (That Looks About Right).
