My neighbor bought a new one and absolutely took a bath trading it in less than a year later. It had numerous quality issues and never got anywhere near the mileage it was supposed to. He willingly paid money to NOT drive one.
Having driven a rental-spec one myself, I wouldn't pay $29/month for one, either.

Bought one in August and have had no complaints. Mileage is great and no noises, squeaks, or mechanical issues. No hot rod, but I didn't buy it for that.
Ive put 67,xxx miles on my 1.4t 6speed Cruze in the past 18 months. Im pleased overall for an appliance.
It wasnt an appreciable step down from the 2008 or 2014 Fusions I had come from as company cars.
Aside from a negative battery cable I've had no issues and am averaging 37.5 mpg. Still on the original tires even.
Looks like I'll be going into a dealership soon. Something like that would have the same operating costs as my old Prizm, even if you count in the $50 or so for the lease.
The two that I've rented were fantastic cars. The first one was even a suprisingly comfortable 'motel' at Road Atlanta while it got down to 28 degrees overnight! Both were much better than the Sentra P.O.S. I rented in between.
I work for GM so I see a lot of Cruzes. They seem to hold up pretty well, we have plenty coming in at the 100,000 mile mark that have just had regular maintenance. The only real issue they have is leaky water pumps but GM issued a special coverage, so those are warrantied up to 120,000 miles now. Not the most exciting car to drive, but they get great mileage (A lot of customers are getting 40mpg and up on the highway). The diesel variant is pretty zippy to drive but we don't sell a lot.
I'd get one tomorrow. However, I can find no evidence of this deal actually existing - not on the Chevrolet website nor any dealer website.
I'd feel silly walking into a Chevy dealer and saying "some website says I can lease a Cruze for $39/month, so give me that deal."

Hey NickD, how's the reliability of the base 1.8 Ecotec vs. the 1.4 turbo?
Mrs. dx and myself had a rental Cruze out in Colorado in October and it kept up with traffic 75-80 mph no problem. Alright vehicle for what it is.
Had a '14 Cruze loaner and liked it, scoots right along. Actually prefer my Dad's '14 Verano w/ NA 2.4L, better suspension too.

I honestly haven't seen much of a difference. We had a few instances of people taking the 1.4Ls to 12,000 miles on an oil change and they would coke up the turbo oil feed and wipe out the turbo but that was extreme cases and I'm sure no one here would do such a thing. Other than that, they seem to be pretty bulletproof.
Oh, and the only other real issues with Cruzes are the valve covers. Something about the breather design on them, they would get whistlin' Dixie and throw like 9 CEL codes. GM has an updated valve cover that is special coverage warrantied that fixes it. And usually the electrical issues that people see can be remedied with a ground cable that GM also updated.
Like I said, they aren't an inspiring car but they are good cheap, efficient transportation.

I'd be interested in someone who knows leases weighing in on this. It seems to me that the deal is entirely dependent on getting the car for a certain price, which the author basically says "You can probably talk them down to this price." Once you're at that price, apply the available incentives (not sure if those are all legit and/or available to everyone) and the GM-calculated residual value does the rest.
But I don't like that he throws this deal out there and assumes you can negotiate to that specific value for a 2016 mid-spec car. Plus he also mentions that you may have to negotiate some of the other fees that dealers like to increase for their own profit. I played around with the calculator on that site and even small increases in the final agreed upon price quickly turned this from a pretty good deal into a pretty crappy deal. It's a shame because I like the LTZ-trimmed Cruzes but they were squarely in crappy deal territory, whereas the good-deal 1LT seems a bit too featureless for my purposes.

It's not a specific deal, rather a stacking of all of the incentives available. Some are probably visible, some not so visible so it is a good hack that someone defined all of them. First line of the article, however, states "First things first: to qualify for this deal, you must be a current lessee of a non-GM vehicle and a Costco member. If not, then the total cost of the lease will rise by $1,500 and $700 respectively." That's gonna knock out a lot of people.
I tried shopping that CUV that Buick sells (I forget the name, because it's forgettable) that had a super-cheap deal listed. It was going to cost $4000 over 2 years, figuring for the down and the monthly.
By the time I didn't qualify for any of the perks, it was $7,000. No deal.
I think these deals are just a hair shy of bait-and-switch. Are there any people who realistically have just gotten out of college AND the military, at the same moment when their current lease is about to end??
I figure that number has to be very close to zero.
