I found a pair of uncut door panels to go in my ford and replace the ones I have with poorly cut speaker holes. While the vinyl is in good shape on my replacements the backer panels are water damaged and falling apart. The fairlane 500 trim is nicer on my originals too.
I was planning on making a new backer for the vinyl from my replacements but how could I go about saving the fairlane insignia? What can I made the backer from?

HomeDepot is your friend. Don't remember the name of the stuff, but it's over in the plywood and paneling area. You'll know it when you see it. Almost exactly like the OEM stuff you've got now.
Some door panel emblems are glued-on, some are held by clips; I'd guess adhesive on your panels. Is the emblem made of plastic or pot-metal?
Maybe an exacto knife around the perimeter? Be careful and don't try too hard to pry the emblem away from the panel. If the emblem is plastic, it will be very brittle and will just snap when pressure is applied in the wrong direction.
Metal badges have the same problem, but don't break as easily.
Good luck!

It's called pressed board or fiber board. You can even get it with melamine coating. Luan also works very well. I know a custom upholstery guru who uses nothing but luan for his backer. Use a heat gun or hair dryer to try to soften glued on pieces.
The HD stuff is also called Masonite. I've use it before as well, with good results. Be aware it is NOT moisture friendly, though. Make sure there is a decent plastic vapor barrier between the Masonite and the door.
I think "Luon" (pronounced LOO-on) is another brand name of a product that will work nicely in this application. probably available at any big-box store.
