It seems that HotRod went out of their way to make the GRM stickers hard to read:

Because of the street driving aspect of Drag Week, it attracts cars from other forms of racing, like Ed Malle’s ’87 Mustang, built for road race and autocross, but here for the week to run the straightaways. We don’t envy Ed or his brother Bob if it rains on the road, the 302-powered Mustang has no windows aside from a windshield!

That's Larry Larson's fight back against the plastic cars. That thing started life as a real S-10. The cab is still the metal stamped by Chevy.

At this point they're splitting hairs. Does it make it more 'real' if you built your chassis to fit the cab? On the track he runs carbon doors, pulls the gasoline fuel system, pulls the radiator, pulls the exhaust. Yes it has a cab, but he's doing a full out insane full team needed race effort. Show me a guy who can drive a plastic car from event to event, turn the methanol pumps on, flip the tune and run and I think it's more in the spirit of drag week than Larson's truck.
No matter what, it's fun to watch. If I could pull my son out of school for a week and not get him in trouble we'd find something to enter.

Andrew just ran an 11.24 @ 117 in Noble, OK. I suspect that he'll be packing up and hitting the road for Great Bend, KS.

No word on Ed yet.

Good to hear! I'm reading bits and pieces of drama at the pointy end of the field. It's not so easy as showing up and running a quick pass six days in a row.

So, Larry Larson is running an Alcohol Funny car in drag? Sure looks good from here.

The only bits I don't agree with is the removal of street gear; at that point and for that run, the car is not a "street car".

I think that the whole event needs to refocus on the driven streetcar theme. "Arrive and Drive" should be the mandate. That means that however you arrive at the track, including tires and or trailer, they need to be attached when you run. Would make for some interesting trailers!

My opinion exactly...they should not be able to change a thing from street to strip. Maybe let the passenger get out before the run, but that's about it:) If they travel with a trailer, it's gotta go down the track as well.

Interesting thing going on with 'crew' work. You've always been able to receive help from other racers, but some guys look like they're getting very consistent help. How long before you enter groups of cars with the intention of the manpower being focused on one car? At that point it starts to look like the Dakar service trucks all over again.
Or maybe I'm just thinking aloud about how I would try to do it.

I could see this as being a class, but if that was how the whole event was, I do not think it would be nearly as exciting. The end of today's livestream is evidence of that.

To be fair, I think Larry Larson was a strong advocate for the spirit of the contest well beyond the point where it went out the door (as it does in all forms of racing). What I see him doing is just creative use of the rules.

But lets face it, if he is allowed to pull stuff out of the trailer to transform his car into a race car once it reaches the track, why not just pull out a complete car and run it? Whore for a buck or for a million, is sitll a whore.

Today: Nelson 11.40 and hitting the road. Looks like Malle is stuck behind a rain delay and hasn't made a pass yet.

I'm trying to be as respectful as possible here, so bear with me. Also, I definitely see how you could think what you think. However, they're still driving cars with 2500+ horsepower 1000+ miles. How cool is that? Furthermore, it's not like they can actually pull out a complete race car, so I don't think your "whore" analogy is quite applicable. They still have to drive their race cars.

If the rules were modified to run what you brought, then they would just drive with the carbon fiber doors, wheelie bars, race shocks, etc. on the car. The only reason I think Larson has a "race" mode and a "street" mode is because of comfort and it attracts less attention. He probably switches doors, because the windows go up and down on the steel doors, and he likely changes shocks so the ride is more bearable. He doesn't run the wheelie bars on the street, because that is probably an eyebrow raiser for a cop. Granted, a lot of the changes do have performance benefits. Although, a lot of the unlimited guys don't make any changes other than dropping the trailer.

Also, I feel like the whole trailer issue is just an extra safety net for a lot of racers. It allow them to bring more spare parts in the case that something breaks. Larry Larson has proven it is possible to win the event with out one though. His Nova that he won the event with 5 times in a row never towed a trailer.

My final point is if they had to run down the track with everything they brought, we would be talking about mid 7 second cars. IMHO that is just not even close to as cool as a mid 6 second street car.

I don't know what to say other than that. I guess the bottom line is, I like the current format and think it makes for a fantastic show.

Guys who don't like the Unlimited probably don't care for F1, or Trans Am, or for any other form of racing that is different then what they run. And that is okay.

HOWEVER, the purpose of this thread was to let the GRM community know that two of their own were involved and more importantly to be on alert that we are both far from home and may need rescued. At this time Ed Malle is broken down in Great Bend and needs parts from KC. He needs to wait to get a rental, pick up the parts, drive back, fix, drive 316 miles, prep and race. Can our community help? Probably, but debating what a street car is may turn some folk off of reading the thread and force Ed to try the impossible.

The Unlimited class is Unlimited.
