Drivers needed for LeMons Houston

I'm looking for drivers for our second LeMons car for the Houston race Sept. 11 and 12 and New Orleans Nov. 20 and 21. The car is a V8 powered 84 T bird. It's fast and pretty reliable.

Cost per race will be $700 per driver plus fuel and a $200 damage deposit. I'll supply the car, spares, tires, tools, and try to fix it if it breaks. You'll need to show up with your gear and be ready to race.

EDIT: Damage deposit is 100% refundable barring any major damage. Also this will be no more than a four man team so you should get a good 4 hours of race time.

LOL @ $200 damage deposit. Sorry, it just strikes me as funny.

What are the driver licensing requirements? I used to hold SCCA National and IMSA licenses, but currently have none.

They used to accept current licenses from other races. It got to be too much for them to deal with. They require a $50 license that's good for one year. I'll cover the cost of it.

$200 damage deposit on a car that is supposed to be worth <$500?

Yeah, even though the car is rather cool, something about this whole thing just seems to go against the spirit of Lemons. $900 to drive a $500 car for a couple hours.

FYI, $850 gets you all day in a 283HP, 1500lb, Brunton Super Stalker.

Sorry, I left a word out. $200 REFUNDABLE damage deposit. Only to be used in the event of major damage. IE motor, trans, or body damage resulting in a trip to the frame machine.

I used to ask for a $100 deposit, and I may go back to it.

People get so hung up on the $500 thing. In reality, I probably don't have $500 in the car including the safety equipment. I do have more hours than I can count in buying, selling, and parting out parts cars, and taking this from a rolling complete car down to a bare shell and back to a very competitive race car.

About half of the money goes straight to LeMons as entry fees. Would you let a stranger drive your challenge car for four hours, wheel to wheel, with 100 other cars for roughly $400? I'm taking a big risk letting that happen, but without the money coming in from car number two I couldn't afford to race car number one.

As someone who has built several cars, I understand that part of the price is to pay for your time to build the car. I don't begrudge you the money.

Yep, $700-$900 for an arrive and drive in Lemons is a good deal and the seats usually fill up fast.

If you dont have the time/skills/desire to build one of these but still want to join the fun it's the way to go. Or just a good way to give it a try before you commit to building one for yourself.
