I have used Cherry bombs in the past. They were my go to cheap muffler for the MR2 that would get me through tec at Lime Rock. The problem is that they would either rust out after a while or much more often get damaged while racing but for about $20 a pop it was considered a consumable on the car.

Jump forward to now and I was pricing cherry bombs and for he one I need it is about $60. However I can get a Dynomax Thrush Glass Pack for less than half that. I know "you get what you pay for" but in this case I am wondering if this really is true? Cherry bomb has become a recognized "name" where as once it was just another cheap brand glass pack.

i got a 3" Cherry Bomb glasspack for my Camaro last fall for $30.. it seemed to be pretty heavily built, and sadly, it wasn't as loud as i thought a single 3" glasspack with a turnout in front of the rear wheel would be on a header equipped small block Chevy.. it actually sounds rather mellow and "V8 like"..

Cherry Bomb got bought out and is now part of a larger corporate "umbrella", so yeah, their prices have shot up. Just use the Dynomax Thrush unit (I've had these before, they are perfect for a glasspack).

Thrush flows best, being a unrestricted perforated tube. Just takes the edge off the Yugo, hearing protection is only mandatory during extended flogging sessions(city traffic) and highway use. Seems to be well built too, my muffler hanger failed and dragged mine several miles but didnt rub all the way through.

If you're worried about durability get a full SS mesh-packed muffler which is basically a fancy glasspack. They are still under $100 and last forever.

Its a perforated tube wrapped in fiberglass with a bigger tube on the outside they are pretty hard to screw up. I had a Thrush on my Jeep it sounded exactly like a glasspack should

Picked up some unpainted glasspacks at Advanced auto for $25ea last year. Think they were Dynomax.

The problem is that on the MR2 I don't have all the structure of the OE bumper. A little tap from behind and the muffler can easily get damaged (and usually does). This is why I liked the cherry bomb of old. They were cheep and worked and when they get bent, dented to the point of needing replacement I did not care. I would usually replace at least 1-2 a season some times more depending on things.

I have a set of Purple Hornies sitting in my shop. They will more than likely go on the Olds until I get an exhaust setup for it. Headers right to hornies should wake up the neighbours

To follow up on this I ended up ordering one from Amazon. $27 and free supper saver shipping to my door. I thought this was a good deal. Jegs and others wanted $29-$32 plus $10-$15 shipping.

I am just amazed at the deals you can get on amazon. I have been scoring some great deals on P car parts there as well.
