You can get it out by just lowering the rear axel, To remove the rear axel you will also have to remove all the Brakes. Ebrake etc. You are 80% there. Re having exhaust - heat shield and driveshaft out. If they are in question then do it.
I didn't have to touch the rear axle when I changed mine. Drop the exhaust, drive shaft, and all the shields and it comes right out. It's still a total pain in the ass, but you don't have to mess with the axle.
I have a brand new gas tank for that car in my garage, but you're probably nowhere near Houston or you already have one...
And I agree with 16vCorey's assessment, though I never actually got around to swapping mine out when I had the car (obviously).
