I found an '87 325is in a junkyard and it had Bilsteins all the way around. Did those come factory with them, or are they aftermarket? I was thinking about getting them, but if they were original to '87, they're probably not worth getting.

You could always get them rebuilt/revalved.

If they are blue and yellow they should be aftermarket ones. They are alot more durable than konis so they are probably still good. In my experience junkyard bilstiens are pretty much just as good as new ones. I wouldnt bother with konis unless its for a very good reason (like they are no longer made for that type of car or whatever) though.

True, but I'm really, really cheap.

The rears are yellow, but they have the factory black dust boot on them. The fronts are cartridges in housings, so I can't see the color, but I can tell that they are the HDs or what ever have the huge mutha pistons that are about 3/4 the size of the housing.

Unless they are the sports I'd ignore them.

What's up with Koni hating?

I don't think people are Koni hating. Just stating that Billsteins will outlast other shocks.

Big pistons should = sports. The dust boot gets re-used during installation, I think. Awesome shocks. Get 'em.

werd. I've had the sports and the konis. not impressed with the konis, not at all. If the bilstiens have an adapter collar 'cause the they're thinner than the oem strut insert that's another clue it ain't oem.

you should get them. $8 each is basically a super bargain no matter how you look at it. They could be HD, but that's ok because the only difference is they are slightly longer than the sports as they are made for stock ride height.

If they have those nice billys on there you'd better take a good look at those springs and see what they are. Could be H&R sports or Eibachs etc. Good for resale.

I had to pass up a set of front coilovers because I had no way of getting the adjuster collars off the struts. No pipe wrench etc. The glad nut was on so tight it deformed the top threads but i could have made them work. They were just Cosmo coilovers so I passed on them.

I know, I want to sell my E30 GC track kit and the Eibach adj sways and step up to the AST kit and H&R sways.

But don't have the monies.

What I meant was konis dont last long enough to be worth grabing from the junkyard unless they are obviously new, bilstiens are 99% of the time good as new even with alot of miles.

The Koni's in my track kit have close to 8k miles on them and are still tip-top.

That may not sound good, but I'm used to sportbikes where, to stay optimum, we used to rebuild the forks/shock every 7-9k miles.

don't tell that to the Konis in my E30 or the Konis on my old Integra. The ones in the E30 have 70k miles on them, and while they have softened a little, I just turn the adjustment up a little bit more and they are as good as they used to be for a street car/occasional AutoX/HPDE car. I had the same experience with over 60k miles on the Konis on the GSR.
