except 20 years ago, $10K was a lot of money to me. Today somewhat less so...
True for a lot of folks, hence the crazy prices today ;)

I could buy one today, but now that I have more money to play with, there are other things I want more.
Rather build a copy with more power and load it with upgrades that would just devalue a real M3

Definitely... reminds me of a Peter Egan story from R&T many years ago when he helped a friend drive a real 289 Cobra they had bought across the country from some western state to his home in NC. The new owner described the car as always "just out of financial reach" until that point in his life when he could move some things around and make it happen.
Besides the E30 M3, the car I've always wanted and pretty much missed the window to buy one is a 1969 Charger. I doubt that market will soften anytime in the near future. Too many Gen-Xers like me who grew up watching Dukes of Hazzard.
I know I had a chance or two to buy an E30 M3 in the past as well. Prices were probably $10k or less. One was sans engine, IIRC.
But I did finally get my M3, and I’m happy with the later model.
Do you guys remember today when you can buy 500-1000 hp cars on the used market for $30-70k. Wow will we look dumb in 20 years when they are all collectible and worth three to ten times as much.
Just to update my E30 M3 experience, bought it for $9995, fifteen year and 60k miles later sold it for $8000. Not bad for a used car but it would be worth much more today.
It sold last weekend for about $57,000 in 1988 valued money. Still a good price, but maybe not so much when you add in the cost of ownership since 1988 (tags, insurance, maintenance, storage, etc.)
