I've had my E30 since November, but never really had reason to try the Cruise Control. So, today I took the freeway to work instead of the normal back-roads and decided to give it a shot. It came on okay, but it speeds past my set speed by about 3 mph then slows down to about 3 mph under my set speed, then does it all again. On my 10 miles of freeway to work, it did that the whole way. Is this normal? What needs to be done to fix it if it's not? Thanks.

Mine does that too, but only when it's cold. If you wait a few miles, then set it, it works fine.

Okay, great, I'll give that a try on the way home.

Where? The car doesn't show any other signs of a vacuum leak.

I'm not sure, I've never even had to do anything on this car dealing with the CC. I'll dig into my Bentley manual when I get home from work (ARGH, why does work always have to interfere with life?...adulthood sucks!) and see what else I can track down.

I'm pretty sure it's an electric cruise control system.

Well, I didn't look too closely, but when I stripped it out of my LeMons car, there was a computer, a separate wiring harness, and a big electric motor just behind the driver side headlights that pulls a throttle cable.

As an aside, apparently E30 cruise control is big in France? My ebay auction had 3 or 4 french guys fighting for it.

laz, you are right. I just got home and it is an electric system. I still have not tried to figure out what exactly is wrong with it (maybe it's just 22 years old). But I'm going to get into it more this weekend when I have sometime. My guess is it's the servo. In the mean time, any other suggestions?

That's odd. I've never heard of a BMW cruise control hunting for speed, usually they work or they don't. I don't see anything in the Bentley manual about this particular situation either.

That's odd. I've never heard of E30 cruise control working at all

My new IX is the only one of all the local E30's with working cruise.

Yup, mine hasn't worked since I bought the car.

Never cared to figure out why either.

Well, I've gone this long without needing it, it just eats at me when something on my car doesn't work and I don't know how to fix it...
