I don't know even how to search for this issue. All power functions on the seat work, but it doesn't stay back. As if the rear seat passengers were getting out, and the seat release didn't go back to normal. All the levers are in the right spot, but it won't stay back. The power "recline" part works fine, but the seatback wants to come forward no matter what. Any ideas?

So is it the seat release or that the height control/motor is actually moving? If it's the release - either the latch or cable is a little berked up. If it's on the motor side - maybe switch is shorting. Time for a lighter, manual seat?

don;t the electric E36 seats have problems with the cables coming loose from their mounts?

Ill check on the cable. That has to be it, as otherwise the whole thing works perfectly.

Is the seat back twisting? Twisting is a cable problem that happens when one of the drive cables is no longer engaging the motor, my E34 had that problem, and its an easy fix.

That doesn't sound like the problem that your having though. It sounds like there is a catch or latch mechanism thats not working. Take the seat out, flip it over and check it out.
