Is there a difference in terms of what side of a shock absorber attaches to the knuckle (or whatever we call the hub assembly). Both sides look the same to my untrained eye.

as far as I know, unless installed "inverted" the heavier end goes down. You want the seals around the shaft to go ontop. If it has a protective cover that slides over the other part of shock, that part goes up

^ Mad_machine is right. It doesn't matter if it's a monotube, but if it's a twin tube it won't work upside down. (stock type E46 dampers are twin-tube) Piston rod (shiny side) up.

I was thinking maybe he is talking about the rear shocks. You can mount the bottom either way, you can twist it 180 degrees and it will still work.

The fronts, I cant remember what the look like. I believe they are sort of "clamped". Just make sure the tab for the brake line is on the proper side.

Oops. Sorry for the confusion. I assumed that shocks meant rears, and struts meant fronts. I was talking rears.

I think you can put the left on the right and right on the left. Just have to look at the tabs and they might be marked left and right.
