I've got my eye on a fairly rare Italian motorcycle on eBay and the listing mumbles something about potentially having to pay taxes at checkout. Given that WV doesn't recognise sales tax on a vehicle paid in another state (plus I don't see the point of paying sales tax in NY anyway), has anybody on here bought a vehicle on eBay recently and more importantly, been charged taxes at checkout?

If the State requires the tax to be charged then you are stuck unless they have an exemption for non residents. It does not have anything to do with the state you live in. Sometimes the seller has to collect and remit on your behalf.

More precisely - eBay is collecting taxes based on the delivery address of the item and as required by that jurisdiction. If vehicles don't pay sales tax until registration, that should not be a problem. Car parts, on the other hand, will have taxes collected.

OK, that's not too bad then. WV charges sales tax when I register the vehicle so I guess the expectation would be no additional sales tax charged by eBay.

I would make sure on that , because once you pay Ebay you will have a hard time getting it back ,

are Ebays computers smart enough to know that some items are tax exempt in a certain state ?

They'd better be. Ours are. Now, if the seller has categorized the item incorrectly, that's not the fault of the computers. Unlikely to be an issue with a vehicle.
