Late at night and I can't sleep. Cruising ebay and I'm finding really cheap 4 point harnesses. Now, I'd never actually trust my life and safety to one of these pieces of junk, but how does everyone feel about wearing them under the stock three point belts at an autocross? Just something to hold my body in place like a CG lock and one of those chest belt thingies. CG lock is $60 and the cheap harnesses are $25 shipped. I know they work, I used to have an off brand (but certified in some fashion) four point belt in my Mk1 Focus for autocross back in the day and I always wore my stock seat belt, partly for safety, partly to shut off the chime. I'll probably wake up in the morning and read this and think I'm an idiot, but right now it seems like a good idea.

Use the belts as their directed. Their safety equipment and do their job. If you want to shut off the chime, go to your dealer and ask for a fat person belt extension. Their free.

Wait, so you're saying that if I were to buy and install something like the Schroth Belts from soloracer.com (to be used only at an autocross in my non caged car) then it would somehow be less safe if I put on the stock 3 point belt over it?
I guess my whole point with the super cheapo harness was I'd use it not as safety equipment, but as something just to hold me in place while I trusted the stock belts to actually save me. It seems that when used like this they would cost less and work better than a cg lock. I've read the rule book, and I'm in a closed car so it seems I'd be legal with the eBay belts by themselves.

I'm just saying, use as directed. Standard answer, but if you're more comfortable with the stock belt in tandem, rock on. Just make sure you are wearing them in the safest way possible.

The safety hazard is when your car goes aflame and your belts are tangled and your wife is on the sidelines yelling, "Oh, the huge manatee!" Things can go badly. Thats all I'm suggesting.

I had not thought of the tangly belt bursting into flame aspect. Things to think about.

cheap cg lock.

buckle seat belt

unbuckle

twist belt once or twice

rebuckle

that will hold you in and be plenty safe. if you odnt have a cage a good snug lap belt will do wonders. and not make the people on the board upset

Not too worried about upsetting anyone, just looking for thoughts. I just went out to the car and did the twisty belt thing and I'll be darned it those aren't the slipperiest belts in the history of cars. Two twists didn't hold. No on three. Four felt ok until I moved. Five worked, in the driveway holding still. Tried it in my truck and the hand of god was holding me at two twists. Bummed that I didn't keep the seatbelt holders when I pitched our old rear facing car seats. I had been really careful to keep them with the seats just in case we ended up back in something without latch anchors.
