In the back of my mind I seem to remember that the engine ecu needs to be mounted to metal/ground, but the mounting place for my GM ecu is on fiberglass. Am I daft?
I can move it over to metal as everything will reach, I'll just have to move the fuel line filter.
It would only need to be mounted on metal if it requires that the case be grounded, and I doubt that's actually going to matter on a modern car. There will be multiple ground wires in the harness.
If by some chance it does matter, you could just run an additional ground wire from a screw on the case to the chassis somewhere.

I should think that vibration is a concern. Electronics suffers greatly during heavy vibration. Remarkably there are spots even in the same panel where vibration is worst.
Move at your own risk.
Mount it on a pillow if you want, just run a ground to it as codrus wrote.
To be safe I'll run a ground. I spent literally hours getting the fuel filter/pressure regulator mounted so I don't want to move it unless I have to. One of the nuts was in a particularly difficult area to reach and I kept dropping it.
It fell in some of the most creative places.
