Has anyone found a grassroots way to work on the rear brakes with electronic parking brake that does not involve using the expensive tool and laptop? I'm working on a 2012 vw cc but it would be nice if it was a general procedure that would work on all models.

On the volvo xc60 you just pull the module off the back of the caliper and then use a alan head to manually turn the piston out.
Not sure if it will work on a vdub, but a bet a little googlefu will tell you
Yeah. Jumper wires directly to the caliper motor. But how do u know if the computer is supplying less than 12 volts to that motor. I may risk damaging it.
The electronic parkings brakes I have seen* usually a menu in the settings to put the caliper on service position.

Vw requires a $300 cable to connect to the computer. In reply to logdog:

Sadly, I'm not surprised it requires a $300 cable. It is modern VW, after all.

If you have a modern VW, and service it yourself, you really should invest in the Ross-Tech cable/software. It's one of the few instances where the aftermarket is better than the OEM service tools, and it's really friggin' cheap for what you get.
If you have a Toyota you can buy a $500 Mongoose cable and a $50 license to download the OE software. I think GM/Ford get $20k for theirs.

So what your telling me is I have to spend a fortune to change brakes with epb?
What's the bad if I remove the motor and retract by hand like Opti's vid?
In reply to Opti:
So to reset the clearances on your Volvo, u cycle the EB on and off and your good to go.

$300 isn't really a fortune in the grand scheme of things. And it's not a one time use purchase. I mean, hell, the hand tools to do the brakes probably cost more than $300 even if you got all cheap stuff. Floor jacks and torque wrenches and such aren't one time use items. (Harbor Freight joke here)

Yeah, but if he sells the VW, and gets a Honda, those floor jacks and torque wrenches and such will work on it. A $300 cable won't.
