I found THIS in my daily CL browsing and have a serious want for it. It's out of my price range and I know nothing about it, but I'd assume that, if I were to keep it in good shape, it would appreciate as I own it. Anyone know anything about Datsun 1600s?
Hotlinked for your enjoymnet:
do it. you are empowered and enabled. that's hot.
Looks like a great deal. Swap the wheels out for something more period correct and you'd have a terrific driver.
I'd suggest a call to Mike McGinnis at Banzai Motorworks. He's a well known and respected Z car specialist in Upper Marlboro MD and if he can't give you any info, he'd be able to suggest somebody.

Always loved these and have never seen one in that blue. Install panasports or other correct wheel and be off to the races! A bit of motivation for you.
Wow, that looks pretty good at that price - if it's close to your budget, go for it!
He forgot to put his thumb over the plate in one of the pictures! IT'S SO EASY TO STEAL NOW!!!
Good-looking car and more reliable than it's British counterparts. Just don't expect a lot of speed. The OHC 2000 cc models are a lot quicker, but the motor is something of an oddball and parts are expensive. If I ever get another, I'd seriously consider putting a later model motor in it.
Looks great. I have a soft spot for those and can't wait to get one. From what I've seen, they seem to be going up in price too. I read online where someone swapped in a sr20de and put like 45000 miles on it all in the span of a year. Beautiful cars

I love those things, a local guy has two of them that he tries to autocross sometimes but even using one to fix the other, they usually both end up broken. Come to think of it, the guy has a lot of perpetually broken E36 M3, it might be the owner more than the vehicle.
And yeah, slower than a worn out bone stock 1.6 miata.
I owned 2. Check for a solid frame. The drivers side frame rail has the serial number punched into it on the top. #SPL311xxxxx. Make sure the dash tag, frame, under hood plate, and the title all match serial numbers.
The only thing is ball joints - $$$$ if shot. And there are a million grease fittings.
I bought one in 1990 because I couldn't afford a new Miata. Now the low end Miatas are in the $2500 price range.
The reason I own my house is because of one of those. I went with a friend to look at one during an estate sale, when the guy showing to us mentioned the house was for sale too. I bought the house and my friend bought the car. Of course he never took possession and traded it to another friend for working on his Porsche.
I still see it and think I should buy it and put back into its long time garage spot. It lived there from birth in '67 until I bought the house in '09. The previous owner's wife used to autocross it for years until she graduated to a Corvette sometime in the late '70's. It sat from then on in the garage.
I'm here to recommend panasports
Owned 2 and they are a blast! I did learn about Snap oversteer from this car!

I kinda like the steelies - everybody has panasports - so do eeet and save the extra 700-800 by not getting panasports.
Look up Datsun1500 from this board. He got banned, but still a very knowledgeable resource regarding these cars. And he lives near Baltimore. He would be happy to help you.
The "L" series engines can be made to perform, and make a nice period swap.

Datsun1500 got banned? Why?
Slightly higher price point, but this one belongs to a guy who occasionally races with our club. https://grandrapids.craigslist.org/cto/5322510271.html
I don't have the coin right now or it would already be in my storage unit waiting for the weather to break.
A guy used to autocross a 2000 roadster with the Solex carbs. I would not describe it as slow.
They're awesome. I've never seen one that wasn't a rustbucket in person. They apparently used the same rustproofing techniques as British Leyland.
That one looks pretty clean though.
That guy in Michigan has a nice car - one of my favorite wheels is the Datsun aluminum that he has in one of his pictures.
There's one of these in yellow in a former Datsun dealer in Chambersburg PA (A-1 Motors, Lincoln Way West). VERY nice, and I'm not necessarily a Datsun fan, but...

Those rims are turbo ZX's. Hard to find but cheap when you do. Any L series motor fits the bell housing. Including sixes and fours. My old 510 had a SSS head on a L20 block. Warmed over cam and a weber downdraft with 225/50's crammed under it. Oh, and a crazy rare S11 gazelle dogleg 5spd. You'll love that machine.
