Your choice! What do you guys think of this:

But... if you want me to try, I can offer up some experiences with the ex's family's similar '48 Diamond T 1 1/5 ton stake-body:
It's loud.
Its cramped.
During the Summer it's hot.
Top speed is about 50 mph - not "comfortable cruising speed" but actual "foot to the floor, in high gear, engine at red-line (which for this engine will likely be around 2K rpm)" top speed.

Kind of. I need a dump, so my thinking is weld up metal sides and tailgate, and make them removable or swingable so I can also use it as a flatbed. As far as the drivetrain, I will have to evaluate that when I drive it. But I'm an ex-diesel mechanic that worked primarily on those old 2 stroke detroits. They are terrible engines as far as diesels go, but I love them because of the sound.
In reply to Ian F:
I only need a dump for local runs for personal reasons. Other than that, I just want it because it's cool. I'm not sure it's worth $4k, but I'm going to look at it tomorrow morning, so we'll see.
I can't imagine what you'd use it for (since I know you work in HVAC and not construction), but it's definitely cool
I have a friend selling an old International grain truck for way less than that. Of course the cost of gas driving it back may make up the price difference.

Like I said, it's for personal, not professional use. I have a lot of property and need to haul things often. I've had dump trucks in the past and currently have a dually pickup that I converted to dump, but it's rusting out, so I want to replace it.
You need a dump truck, you have a CDL, it's a nifty truck, it's not too expensive.
What's the question?
A lot of character. Essentially a truck to use on your property with some dump runs thrown in? When you go to look at it are you planning on driving it back?
In my state it's a PITA and very expensive to register a "commercial" vehicle for private use. Your state may be different. Go for it!
In reply to T.J.:
If I can't drive it back I won't buy it. I have no way of trailering something that big.

I didn't think you were going to tow it home. I guess what I really meant to ask was if you were going alone or with someone, so you could drive it home if you buy it. IF so, then it sounds more like you are going to pick it up tomorrow unless you see some red flags when you look at it in person. If you were going alone, it would be more like you were going to look at it and may buy it. How far away is it?
I've seen farmers sell grain trucks with dump beds that were twice the truck for half the price. But only 1/3 as cool. So you need to decide how much more its worth to have a cool dump truck than a good dump truck.

Oh, okay. I won't be driving it home tomorrow. I would leave a deposit and go back with someone to pick it up. It's about an hour away. That drive home would likely be the longest drive I take in it!

Yeah, I see your point. I do have to say that the cool factor is big with this one, IMO. I'm willing to pay more for that. I don't have any more information at this point than what is in the ad, so it may be a great buy or a pig. Only one way to find out..

Yeah, I'm not sure about that 3-71 engine. Big on bore, low on cylinders, so we'll have to see how it pulls. I could always turbo it if needed.
