http://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/2015/06/nurburgring-management-bans-manufacturers-from-attempting-publishing-ring-times/

This stems from the accident earlier this year where a spectator was killed. Rather than do anything about the track's "historic" safety, they're putting a speed limit on the corner where the car went off and banning manufacturer timed laps.

These times are of vital importance to supercar buyers who need factory drivers to prove their car's performance for them so obviously this won't do. I don't think another track will become the new benchmark. I think it's more likely that pro drivers, totally not affiliated with the factory in any way, will be lent a supercar for a day of fun on the 'ring, along with a completely unaffiliated media and pit crew, with no pressure whatsoever to do a 10/10ths lap

This must have went on with the 'Ring's management.

I don't know much about racing like a lot of you here do but speed limit and racetrack sound ridiculous to me in the same sentence

I wonder how much money the factories have poured into the 'Ring, especially when it was not doing well. Track rental fees were probably keeping the place open, and now they are biting the hand that feeds them. Stupid.

It doesn't matter, guys. If a car were set up for the Nurburgring, it would be terrible on the street. The Nurburgring isn't as much a test of speed as it is a test of durability.

I arranged that specifically so no one would ever be able to see if a Focus RS can do a lap faster than the new Civic R.

It would be a damn shame for them to have to go to Spa, Zandvoort, Brands Hatch, or any of the other great natural road courses in EU right?

well it looks like they're have to use the stage roads of WRC Monte Carlo as the measuring stick now.

Oh darn....No more internet pissing matches over ring times. I'm so disappointed :) Now what will all of the internet fanbois ramble on about?

They were probably forced into it by the insurance company. If something happens that requires a liability payout, insurance companies look for ways it could have been prevented and write those ways into future contracts.

It does seem to me that it would have been better to have changed things such that the spectators couldn't be in the danger zone, though.

Not sure how I feel about this. On one hand ring times are useless but on the other I hate to see it lose that cashflow.

The times may be useless but at the same time they are interesting to talk and BS about. It is a benchmark. I regard a time around the 'ring higher than I do 0-60, 1/4 mile, horsepower or G numbers.

Unfortunately, I feel that the ring will be a thing of the past long before I will get to see it and drive it in person

Time to make our own "green hell" on this side of the pond. I nominate Deals Gap.

From what I read over on Pistonheads this morning, it's not necessarily that timed laps are banned, it's that the manufacturer in question isn't happy that the speed limit applies to them as well and that it would allow them the lap time they think they deserve.

I think one hundred thousand lawyers just started frothing at the mouth at just the thought of that. If you can't do it in Germany due to liability reasons you sure as heck could never get away with here.

I personally like your idea though.

I'd prefer it if they stuck to Avus.

Avus is my favorite course. It's one big long "What the BERK were they thinking??

Why not just build a full scale model (elevation and all) in the desert or plains somewhere?

You mean like Honda allegedly did in Japan?

PS - Annoys me that C&D revealed their SE Ohio test loop.

The manufacturers will continue to use the track for development, have no fear.
