The infamous JVL built Morten Vodge Dolt is for sale.

It needs an engine, one piston is holed according to the owner.
What would be the simplest engine to get a hold of and swap in there? I'm looking for easy to find and easy to bolt in. Honestly, this is most likely a bench exercise, I've been way to busy lately. OTOH........

Rotary? That would take of that holed piston issue.
I learned to drive in a '74 Dodge Colt. I'd love to have another one, but I'm not sure why.

Do you guys even read the OP? Bolt in and easy.
Honestly, I'd get another 4G54B - I've never been a fan of destroking anyway, so just throw a stock one with some better parts and it would exactly bolt in to everything, even his cool cam and new ecm.
Its in Canada I see - a Hyundai Pony 1.6L bolts right in - same motor as stock. Only 70hp or so though.

I imagine it would be a bazillion times easier to find a Dodge Raider or a D50 to give up its G54b than a still-functional Pony.
Wouldn't a Starion engine or 4G63 bolt in with minor mods? I may be wrong, I'm not too familiar with the Diamond Star stuff.
Go old school - 340!!
Or go new - S2000 engine.

There is a still a few kicking around Alberta and BC. They are quite robust mechanically but very rust prone. I wouldn't have suggested it except he asked for bolt in and its the same as the Colt motor - Mitsubishi 4G32 engine.

I have seen it posted on a number of other forums that windshields for these cars are unobtanium.
rebuild the current motor, its been succesful this long or a 4g32
I am puitting together a 2003 PT Cruiser 2.4L with 1999 Neon DOHC cams, a Wrangler/Liberty exhaust manifold, 2004 Stratus intake manifold (over cam cover like 2.3L Ford), a Wrangler/Liberty bellhousing Supra transmission. It is my intention to run everything with the factory Neon computer with the injector swap and a modified wire harness. I will use an aftermarket catalytic converter and a 2.25" exhaust to a y pipe and dual mufflers.
I am hoping to get the similar performance of the original engine (150hp) with the mileage of a swapped Neon because the weights are very similar and the final drive is similar.
I still have the spare 2.4(?) that came with my Colt. I was told it was a built engine, but had low compression in one cylinder. It's still in the same place I put it when I bought, and then sold, mine.
Located in 60963, make me an offer if you're interested.
FWIW, I always wanted to do a 4G63t.
Mazda 13BT with a T04. And yes, I read the OP.

I like the parts bin engineering with this one. A lot of different vehicles combined for one good end result.

A Starion mill is essentially the same as what's in there. A 4G63 would work, but you can't use a transverse one because the bellhousing is different. You need the bottom end from one specific year of Dodge D50/Mighty Max (I think it was '88?) and then you can plunk the head from a Talon or whatever on. I think you could do some mix-and-matching of internals to get the forged crank from the DSM and whatever compression ratio you want. It all bolts together but it's not an easy, single-donor swap. Would be the same procedure as putting one into a Starion, it's been done & the info is out on the web.

BTW it puts the exhaust out the correct way for Jeffs MOPAR and my non MOPAR project...
Those Pony motors are the same (1.6) motor that car originally came with, and they're stout as hell. I've built my share of them, and just scrapped a few complete ones.
I'd go 2.6
In reply to Zomby woof:
Not doubting you, but I blew mine with only 37k miles on it.
As this one has had a 4G54 swap, I'd probably pull another 4G54 out of a pickup (this was also used in Mazda B2600s besides the Dodge / Mitsu trucks) or Starion.
