Considering I've watched a flywheel break into 4 pieces, destroy the transmission, stick one piece in the pavement, and launch the other bits really high into the air(through the bodywork of the corvair) .....I don't think kevlar is the answer. Possibly Kevlar and some mild steel plate would work.....I'll bet you that 3/8" thick AR500 steel will contain a flywheel though.

We couldn't even dent that with even a 30-06 last weekend, but the 1/4 mild steel plate looked like swiss cheese.

What? Nah, you probably work out. That stuff would bounce right off. It's only like 18000Gs.

This thread reminds me that I need to build one for the Jensenator. Per SCCA Solo rules, a Mod car running race slicks is required to have a scattershield spec'd (IIRC) at 1/4" aluminum or .120 steel and driveshaft loops. Reason for driveshaft loops:

That's the Jensenator's trans tunnel as it was when I got the car.

I will probably overbuild my scattershield. Having seen a Mustang which was cut nearly in half due to a flywheel explosion, I'm more inclined to err on the side of caution at the expense of a few pounds.

No kidding - I made some metal targets with 9/16 hot roll I had laying around and all a 30-06 does is clean the rust off it.

It was a few thousand horsepower more than we're talking about here, but I like to link this picture:

Truck bed liner, slightly modified, is used to "explosion-proof" things.

But in the application you need to be sure not to get any on your hootus.

I'm sure they have protective hootus suits for the contractors that did the Pentagon.

Well that's to go with the "acceptable losses" M16A1.

An explosion blanket around a bell housing may well contain an exploding flywheel (though many times the blanket is too far rearwards to catch it). But that doesn't mean the tranny tunnel isn't going to get hammered.

IDGAF about the tunnel as long as my lovely gams are unscathed.

I went looking for an image of the kevlar saw pants I used to wear in the bush stopping a chain, but I found this instead and got sidetracked. It may be relevant anyway so I thought I should post it.

Wow, a CRT monitor, don't see those every day any more.

What, was the focal point of the picture something else?

I'd suggest using the scattershields as bracing.

Use a .120 wall square tube instead of a .250 sheet - remember, it has to go through both sides of the tube.
