As some of you may know, I was looking at a couple Saturns a week or two ago but both were snatched up and i'm back at the drawing board. Instead of looking for another vehicle, i've been thinking about taking out the 1.9 in my Escort and putting in the 2.0 non Zetec that was in the 97+ sedans and wagons since everything basically bolts up from what i've read. Has anybody here done this swap?

The honorable former Love Gov said: I would often swap them until I found one I liked

Everything I read said it was straight forward. Unfortunatley I totaled it before It needed a new engine.

What would the advantages of this be over a BP swap?

I know there is a difference on paper between the two engines, but drive them back to back. With an aggressive tune on the 1.9L computer I bet you could get the same response or better.

Don't forget to look up Jeffscorts turbo swap.

In reply to 93celicaGT2: I think the advantage over the BP swap in this case is that since it currently has the 1.9 Ford, there would be minimal wiring required to make the 2.0 spi happy compared to swapping the BP+trans+halfshafts+wiring.

Another option: the 2.0 head/intake on the 1.9 block is supposed to be good for a turbo build (lower compression), and the flipping a dsm turbo manifold makes it not too difficult.

In reply to 93celicaGT2:

The 2.0 spi bolts right up to the 1.9 clutch/flywheel/trans. The 1.8/1.9/2.0 trans can't be mixed and match. I had a Protege lx with the bp and it was pretty dead below 3-4k. A friend of mine has a wagon with the 2.0 and it felt like it had more usable power. I've found 2.0's to be more common and cheaper on cl.. I'll have to look up the 1.9 computer tune. I don't really want to go fi since this is my daily driver..

Got me there.....

On a semi-related note... you see that Foundnemo25 made 371whp/422ftlbs on an SPI-T? CRAZY.

97dragscort on feoa.net is posting a lot of info lately on a new tuning method for the 1.9. Looks pretty nifty. Might want to look into it.

And yes, you're pretty right about the BP having no low end power. Mine has NOTHING until about 3500rpms.

I just wasn't sure what your intent was.

I personally don't care where the powerband, as long as it has it when i want it.

The Escort, to me, is perfect. The Celica, is decent. The MX6, has almost too much powerband for how i drive. I'll adapt i guess.

I absolutely loved my SPI Focus (w/ SVT suspension). It made cool noises with no intake resonator at 3200+ RPM. I also liked the IB5 transmission's feel over the cable actuated MTX75 in my wife's Zetec Focus.

Swap is relativeley straightforward. Plus all the low mileage junkyard 1.9s are gone. SPI has a better flowing head and does have a bit more grunt to it. My 91 1.9 Pony is really happy above 3500 rpm but is a much lighter car than the Escorts that have the SPI engine.

feoa.net is a goldmine for this info.

I have a header for sale on feoa.net. Email me through the GRM board if you're interested. It was originally for my 1.9L poop 'scort but I fixed my existing manifold instead of installing it. Photobucket
