back in the mid 1970s(76 I believe) I bought a 66 Mustang fastback at the NJ shore. It was white, with a black roof. After I went down to look at the car, I realized it was what was left of a 66 shelby... SFM6S1299 it was still a 289, but the hi-po was long gone. The dash was still there, but the tach was gone... so the hole in the dash for the tach was one of my first clues...

I was 17, and living @ my parents... my mom believed it to be too powerful and forbade me to register it. I drove it up and down my driveway at least 50 times... before having $ issues and having to sell it.

edit - Oh... when I owned it... it DIDN'T have sequential lights!!!!

I see mine every now and then...restored and cruising! Just 3 months short of being 40 years though. 1969 Shelby Mustang, big block 4 speed with a bad starter. Spent all my lawn mowing money to buy it.

Took it home(push started) fixed the starter and cleaned the hell out of it.

Dad got home and made me take it back as I was only 14 and I would kill myself in that gas-guzzler.Hindsight leads me to believe that I WOULD have killed myself in it.

Didn't even get all of my $475 back as a lesson to not be stupid.

Yeah, but it was a Tonka truck.

I still have 24 more years to go before i can find a car i owned 40 years previously. Actually, it's more than that because i know for a fact the first several cars i owned met their end in the scrap heap.

I own rare stuff, but not the kind of rare that is valued or appreciated. Ill be bamboozled if i see any of the stuff i have now still in existence in 40 years.

I owned a Fiat 850 Spider in the mid 1980s for awhile. I traded another car for it. I sold it when it started to need too many things, and parts were getting hard to come by for it. The car was a jigsaw puzzle of various 850's but had been painted up nice and was a nice driving car. It was already an oddity at the time because Fiat had bought most of them back for a government forced rust recall.

2-3 years ago (so it would be almost 30 years) I'm cruising the classic section of my favorite U-Pull-It junkyard here in PA and spy this carcass of a Fiat 850 Spider. Sure enough, it is the same car (there were a few unique things done to it that were easy to ID). The car was a rusted mess, and it did sadden me at first, but then I realized it had outlived most of it's brethren by a good 30+ years. I had (mostly) good memories of my time with it, so gave it a sad little pat on the fender and went on with my day.

With the Shelby still around I got to thinking about my other cars since then and actually only one is totally gone! My second car from 1975 appeared at a local body shop last year, a 1958 Ford. I still own my 4th car (1976) it is a 1969 Mustang. My 1974 Mustang (1980)lives a sheltered life in Arkansas.I drove this car for 10 years! My old 1986 Escort EXP (1990)does a 50 mile commute 5 days a week and seems ageless.See it about once a month. The 1995 Mustang that I bought new is owned by a nice family and has served 2 daughters through high school and the 12 year old boy might get it when he gets his license.

I am not sure exactly when Carfax started but every so often I'll go on and check out some of my old cars that I have owned and sold. Mostly Japanese sports cars, RX7s, Z cars, SE-Rs and so on. It's kinda sad as they bounce around to different owners, some go out of state and then end up being in an accident and/or just being scrapped. I always have a bit of an emotional attachment to them and feel a little sad as they go away.

I would have to have owned a car at 7, although my Hot Wheel collection might have started at that point. But it would be fun to see if my first car (77 Grand Prix) is still running (doubt it), and what happened to my Camaros and Lil Red Express I had in the 80's.

Mostly Lil Red so I could try to buy it back.

I was driving a Mk IV Sprite 40 years ago. I doubt it exists in any form other than oxide dust which would now render it as a toxic material.
