Ever miss out on a great deal?

I just found out today that someone at my father's workplace was giving away an AW11 MR-2 for FREE. He said it wasn't bad; it was actually in pretty good condition for the price (or non-price), the owner just wanted to be rid of it. I missed it

When they say "Oh, I should have called you," it makes me want to punch nads.

i missed an early 90s 4.0/5spd wranger with soft doors, half doors, full doors, soft top, and hard top for $1200.

I missed out on an RX-7 GTUs two months ago. I headed to RX7club and checked the classifieds, and what did I see? The new owner selling the wheels it came with, but not the car.

1979/1980 in Caldwell N.J.

86 grand national without engine but nice body for $500 - this was when i was 16 and had no $ to buy an engine. it was also when you had to look through the newspaper classifieds for cars and parts.

then 2 weeks later there was a complete running 86 grand national engine/trans with wiring and computer for $300

ouch.

Circa 1977 - Running, driving, safety inspected legal Porsche 356 sunroof coupe with VW motor installed and with new floor pans - $600

Went back the next day and it was gone.

I've only missed one, the first one. 1980 AMC Spirit AMX. 304, 4-Speed, black with the flares and wings. Left a deposit so we could come back in the morning with the car trailer and the old grouch had sold it out from under us for the same damn price.

Every "deal" since then has wound up in my hands, hence why I've owned over 100 cars already...

You mean like when my aunt sold her Super-Bee for $300, and didn't know I would have been interested? Or when that same aunt helped a neighbor give away that "junk" Indian Scout, and didn't let me know because she thought I wouldn't be interested? Or when a girl friends mom sold her glass back Cuda for $5 because she didn't know it was worth anything and didn't know I would be interested?

But hey, sometimes I do get lucky, and I don't miss. Sometimes I do get lucky.

But then, bargains cost money.

1968 Firebird, 400 4spd $600.00. I had spend the money to go to my moms funeral in Fla. Triple bummer of a weekend.

1951 Ford 2 door woody with V-8 $450.00 in 1980

'67 Healey 3000 mk III $1900.00 in 1971

'65 E Type needed trans, primrose yellow $1500.00 in 1970

68 Hemi Charger automatic in 1976 for $500.

It was the baddest car in Wolcott,CT at the time.

70 Buick GSX Stage 1 for $500 in 1977, 70 Trans am RA III $ speed for $1500 in 1979.

1954 V-8 Studebaker coupe $200 in '64 1947 Ford Conv $85 in 1965 '63 vette coupe $900 in '73 Shelby Mustagng 350GT $2000 or so in '71

1990: '69 General Lee replica w/ a 383 A/T for $2200 that I passed on because it had a little bit of rust in the trunk...

1991: Pro-restored (shop's 'filler project') '69 GTX 383 A/T for $3500. Ready to go. Needed nothing.

1989: '72 Charger 318 A/T that was mine for the taking if I could get it out of my co-workers driveway. Sadly, I didn't know enough about cars at the time to get it running.

1987: my mother's old '71 Demon that we let get towed away after she bought a new car. It had some rust that I fiddled with... but if only I'd known how rare/expensive these cars would become...

I could go on... as I'm sure most of us could...

Wow . . .those are some deals . . . I never happen upon deals like those. . .

In high school, I inherited the '67 Plymouth Belvedere II hardtop that my grandfather bought new. A few years later, I sold it for $300 because I couldn't find a replacement for it's leaking gas tank. I had no idea at the time that there was any market for old Mopars.

I spent ten years trying to find that car and buy it back, only to find that a guy cut it up and used nearly everything to restore a GTX a few months after I sold it.

Speaking of deals.....

Anyone want an 83 944 chassis with a full cage in it? It would be free to whomever wants it.

It is a former ChumpCar competitor and it currently isn't rolling. The glass is available though.

6 or so years ago....Original paint, non-rusty 510 for $1500 here in Ormond Beach. I waffled too long and it was gone. Well, gone to a surfer dude who's letting it rust by the beach.

I've missed a lot of killer deals in the last 30yrs since I got my drivers liscense. I also GOT a lot of killer deals too.(200+ and counting) Talking to a good friend one day, talking about the "wish I still had this, Sorry I sold that" and he put it all in perspective for me. He said "Listen, you had them, and enjoyed them,most anyway. Besides you just would have lost them in the divorce!" Wise man., all I left her with was a '96 Sable.

I make myself feel a little better by telling myself that I'm still doing a little work on the E30, have a big list for the Jeep, and wouldn't have had money for the MR-2.

I've had a lot slip through my fingers, especially since I sold my truck, and now can only easily buy running projects (its done wonders for slowing my rate of churn down), but one hurts the most:

I'd gotten injured in 2006, so my fantastical plans for a hot rod at the $2006 Challenge got put on ice, and I needed something, anything to compete with. 350 TPI Trans Am in good running shape for $1200. Sold out from under me as I was headed to the guys place to pay him for it. To see why this hurt, check what I brought to the challenge that year - I finished 2nd to last.
