Is this even possible without spending money? I'm interested in finding my old high school car. It's 1 1976 so only a 13 digit VIN, so no luck on Carfax unless they changed recently.

Unless you have a friend at the DMV willing to risk termination and possible legal action or you're willing to use more fraudulent means, it's not likely to find access to both VIN and the current owner information. I work for environmental protection in air quality and have made a legitimate work related request to dot and dmv for only VIN information (no ppi) and despite being an inter agency request, lawyers are involved as well as the department heads. That said, before 9/11, I had a friend search an old MG I had once and I now own it again. Not likely to happen now though.

Even a Carfax-like report would be helpful. Like if nothing is listed after 1997 it's likely been crushed, turned into a Toyota pickup frame, and recrushed by now.
