I don't do enough valve work to justify the $1,100 cost of this kit, but my buddy does! Now he sends the stuff out because it's cheaper than having a Tech stand there for 8 hours doing this. I was the last person to use the kit when doing the $2004 Challenge.

Thank you Paul.

An expandable mandrel slips into the valve guide, tighten it up and the 3/8" part sticking out is that centers the carbide tipped cutter. There are six different sized mandrels. Multiple cutters can to 15, 36, 44, 45, 46 and 60 degree angles. I used a "whip" to clean up the carbon and schmegma inside the runners and then did the cutting.

There is a second tool that is a female cone for cutting the valves, 45 degrees only.

The only thing left is lapping.

The black thing is a T Handle for turning the cutter, there is an option for a drill press device.

The carbide cutters can be loosened and slid up or down so they don't hit something you don't want nicked.

The kit with multiple diameter expandable mandrels, an assortment of heads, replacement carbide cutters, cleaning brushes and all the tools.

This is the other Neway set, it cuts the valves. Carbide cutters and at the bottom of the cone is a collar, several in the set for various sized valve stems. Hold the stem in a vice between pieces of wood and rotate the cone in the direction of the arrow. Amazing.

I last used a neway when I was doing my apprenticeship close to 15 years ago. They are pretty good at what they do, but you need to be consistent and know what your doing, you can really butcher the job I you don't.

If I ever come across one for sale cheap I'll probably buy it, but really, it's probably just easier to send the head to a machine shop.

Great pics and write up by the way.

I just use a felt tip pen instead of Dykem. The neway cutters are good if one is specializing in a one model of engine. Otherwise the cost of all those cutter starts to add up. I've got a Hall Toledo/Waterbury grinder, for which the stones are reasonably priced and can be dressed to do any cut. I've done B&S go cart engines and Rolls Royce V-8s, just change pilots and stones. If a good seat is cut, lapping shouldn't be needed. And with the super hard seats common on current engines, lapping goes very slowly and throws a lot of abrasive around.

Dr. Hess: Quite well, just waiting for parts now.

Paranoid: I stop when the seat is clean, what's the point is stopping before then? You have to adjust the valves anyway.

You mentioned a place to work on Liberty- I'll mention that I did my head with these tools at Washtenaw Community College- they had these tools (as well as a valve grinder). Just have to take the right class there. (granted, this was 15 years ago, but I'm sure they still have them)

I have a few local shops that have Serdi valve machines.... no reason to invest in the Neways at this time......

I'm a little surprised the Neway valve cutter can't do a back cut.....

Maybe it can, I'm no expert.
