You can also use a crappy cord to your advantage, like to weld thin sheetmetal with a crappy flux core welder.

Is 100' the shortest cord you can get away with?

I just picked up a 12ga 25' cord at Walmart for $20 :)

I don't need anythign longer.

The 100' long 10 gauge one I picked up at Home Depot worked for me. I'm not thrilled with the quality of my welds, but I think they'll do the job. And...they're underneath, so at least nobody will be looking at them. I hope I improve as the project (http://grassrootsmotorsports.com/forum/build-projects-and-project-cars/1989-car-hauling-trailer-refit/59467/page1/) progresses.
