Ok guys.

Talked my boss into coming to an auto-x and he's now hooked! He's got a 2006 GTO that's stock besides the cat back exhaust. I haven't been able to find much info on FS GTO's so if anyone knows anything, it's people here.

I've recommended running the first year on 255 RS-3's while he learns the basics. Besides that and Koni yellows. Who's got sway bars for this beast?

So if GRM was doing an FS GTO.. WWGRMD?

Thanks!

Check with Whiteline for Holden Commodore and Monaro swaybars. 18mm rears and 30mm fronts.

BTDT, they are seriously under-rated. Get tires on it immediately. Front end has no camber and no stock class allowance for it. Consider switching to STU instead. We did and won a Regional Championship.

If we went the STU route what type of suspension do these things like.

I've had an STX E36 then STS Miata and now ST Civic so I have no idea on what these need to make them work.

Oh, for the STU deal.. I know the rear wheel is a limiting factor... any options out there you know of? Basically what was your STU set up?

Our STU setup:

  • Stock 17's with 245/45/17(F) and 275/40/17(R) Falken Rt-615's (I'd go with RPF5's and Star Specs now) and 1/4" spacers to get -1.5 degrees camber in front
  • Factory Holden/GM front camber kit (this is KEY)
  • Hurst Competition Plus (the stock shifter blows)
  • Minor power mods (K&N, fluids)

The car had too much power for the tire as-is. Now that's got a bunch of miles on it and not brand-new I'd replace the shocks and springs with coil-overs and do the full bushing kit from Pedders. With the STU suspension arm allowances I'd also go tubular rear LCA for weight savings. I don't know if bigger bars would help any, it's pretty neutral and the rear likes to bind over bumps as it is. I'd maybe go sans rear bar honestly.

If you finagle with the suspension enough and really get it to stick well, the power upgrades are stupendous. Tuner, CAI, full-length headers, high-flow lightweight cats, cat-back, and pulleys would make ~450-460HP easily.

With our setup I bested an STU E36 M3 and all of F-Stock at a Regional, to win the class and place well into the top half overall out of ~100 cars. I keep saying one of these would be deadly at Nationals if worked over to the rules limits and tested.

I'd sure recommend street tires for a beginner. He will learn better car control and better habits working with less rubber. He can get the soft tires after his first season.
