I like running donor cars - all the wires are there to make it work. It's the little stuff that'll kill a swap or triple the cost and effort.

Edit: Found on GT40s.com "Audi promo propaganda that the lump weights 195kg and is 464mm long" or about 430lbs and 18.27 inches. To heavy for the back of my Kelmark, but if a mid engine chassis ever finds its way to me, this would be perfect.

Edit 2: found another post that stated the 18" is the new chain driven cam engine, the older belt driven where a bit longer.

Come back when your answer doesn't involve a stupidly expensive adapter that winds up making an LSx swap cheaper with more power out of the box.

Yeah, that is the beauty of the Audi engine, there are transaxles that you can bolt up. I think I might have found stand alone ECU, but I need to investigate more after work.

That's one of the worst motors Audi has made in a long time. Byzantine (and very expensive!) fire wall mounted timing chain. Motor likes to eat oil, drop valves and score cylinder walls.

I wouldn't swap one of those into my car if I got it for free, parts and labor...

I noticed something with this. I believe the VW version of the Porsche transmission will work. Why is this important? Location of the starter cutout in the bell housing. Porsche has it at the top where the other ones are on the side.

From what I have read one from behind a diesel VW works well due to gear ratios and isn't sought out.

In Europe, the Audi V8 is almost the equivalent of the SBC. Common and cheap. I am finding ways to overcome the stock Audi IMO chip that is online, very detailed. After that, it is just running down the associated wires with the Porsche harness and building an adaptor harness to allow the Audi ECU to talk to the Porsche ECU enough to allow the chassis systems to work.

Of course, there are things that aren't foreseen until you sit down and do it, but I believe this is becoming a more feasible swap.

Where this gets really interesting is the idea opens up to the Supercharged V6 that gives the RS line a run for it's money with just a tune.

Figure out that swap and a $3k Boxster becomes a 911 Turbo killer with no cutting required (The Renegade V8 Boxster kit requires some cutting.)

I really looked into doing this to my own car, but the biggest reason not to is that a 996 Carrera 3.4L flat six engine practically bolts in, makes more power and in the end, would cost less to do. I will prove it with my own 3.4L - into early Boxster - swap. The only useful information I can offer to someone actually contemplating the swap is that it's necessary to use a 2001 or older Boxster as the engine recipient, because as of model year 2002, Boxsters all have CANBUS networks that won't play nice with Audi electronics or (supposedly) stand alone EFI

What does it matter? Crummy/rebuilt salvaged or Crash damaged 996s are well under $10,000, and to offset the cost of my 3.4, I'll selll my over-maintained Boxster 2.5 for as much as I can get for it, then sell the 996 roller. I think I can be all-in and have it running for well under $10k, probably 5k if I'm careful and/or get really lucky selling the 2.5 and 996 roller

If it's a high enough number i may even daydream about swapping an audi 4.2 into my 911.

I have done alot of research on the 4.2 and if you are thinking of using one of these motors you want a 2004 or earlier as they have the front mount timing belts.

I was / am thinking of a challenge build that involved this motor. I think MO30 knows what I am thinking of doing. It involes creating speed through subtraction instead of through adding go fast parts.

I've said it many times before, The 1uz will make more power than any LS swap when the budget is even. It's minimum $6,000 for any LS swap into any car. (GM cars that came with one don't count). 500$ for an adapter, 400$ for the 1uz. I'll be into my swap a total of $1,000 when I'm done. That leaves me $5,000 to throw at a turbo kit.
