Thats not designing, thats cut and paste! your blue car is an exact dead ringer for the 918. The 918 has already been designed. All you did was tweak it a bit in photoshop...big deal! Try designing something new that has not been done. sure use other cars for insperation, but dont cut and paste and call it your design. Its poor taste and plagiarism. Just saying...

Welcome to the board! 3 posts in and you've 1) ripped someone in your first post, and 2) lambasted the wrong person to boot.

Great. I can't wait to see the changes and ISO view. If I might make some suggestion (these are just my opinion, so take it with the requisite grain of salt :) ) You might want to increase the front overhang a bit to better match the rear overhang (which I think is up against the limit imposed by the subaru tranny, correct?)

You may also want to better integrate the curve of the waistline from the door panels to the rear quarters and transition that curve into the rear fender flares. To me that's the area with the most obvious transition. The front end flows very nicely into the side panels but when you reach the rear quarters there's a fairly abrupt transition from smoothly flowing curves to a more angular feel. I think the "wedge" shape that frames the tail lights is a nice way to transition into an angular rear end (if that's your goal) but you might want to make the tail lights a tad shorter to keep with the overall proportions of your design from front to rear.

Again, I leave for a day or two and I miss so much!

I can probably answer a few questions that have been floated here.

Judges are already decided, We are just waiting on a few guys who may join this weekend. I can tell you that one judge is a professor of design at the worlds leading design school, one is a world famous car designer, one is a leader in CAD technology, one is a leader at a Fortune 100 company (pandering to our sponsors), one is from the Grassroots Motorsports community, and we have Jim here at Factory Five.

In deference to the judges who have not signed on yet we are not releasing this information, but its only a week or so before we can crow about em.

As far as designs are concerned, WOW! All of us at Factory Five are BLOWN away...

You do know we are submitting designs for a company with 80% of their designs being replicas right? Meaning the cars they manufactured had already been designed...and manufactured by somebody else. Are you going to try and rip Factory Five for plagarism too? So what If I mocked up a baby 918? It is one of the most heralded designs of the decade. The car specs, a flat-4 powered mid engine roadster are shouting for a modern 914/718 RSK.

Its funny because the first thing anyone will do when looking at a concept is try and bring themselves back to whats familiar in other cars. There are a lot of changes and tweaks needed to make a concept fit the design template and we have seen many examples. I had never thought of and RX7 when mocking up the white concept. And the 8C is front engine, and quite frankly does not have the nicest side profile. You are right about the 918 vents, but why not have a lusty design feature like that on the car?

Anyways at the end of the day I came up with what I wanted the new FF car to look like. Put the pen to the paper and show us what you got, because your words are just a waste here. Just saying...

First off, welcome to the neighborhood. I think you'll find it a little different than many forums on the internet; we're typically a low-key, supportive bunch who share our love of cars. We hope you can join us in that spirit.

With that in mind, how about we let the panel of judges decide on the line between inspiration, derivation, and plagarism? Better still, rather than criticize another entrant's design, show us what you think is more original, more compelling, and generally better.

Agreed... looks very nice. You can see K1 influences but the grille and headlights make it different enough.

Can't in good faith promise it'll be my last techie question: in UK / Europe headlights have to be between 500 & 1200mm off the ground and (iirc) no more than 300mm inset from max width; would this also pass muster in the US?

@tjcanale: Excellent, LMAO! Instantly got the Gumpert reference even before I glanced back up to read the text. I'm guessing this one DOES retain the Scooby rad

+2 ...for the most part. I think if you manage to scale down the size of the front overhang, youve REALLY got something there. It looks great, just needs rhinoplasty. Personally, I like the scale of the Porsche 914 - tiny nose, big muscular midsection and booty - thats the direction Id like to see this thing move in. I love your fenders, hood shape, and side scoops!

haha I appreciate the comments.. I'm totally with you with the nose.. I couldn't for the life of me figure out how to "classily" finish out the front grill of the nose, but I am a fan of the side vents and "gumpert like" fenders. There have been a lot of nice designs on here. I can't wait to see the final product.

tjcanale: I do like the attack and I like your hybrid gumpert smash

Really greta work. I cant tell you guys how really impressed the crew at FFR are about these ideas... Even some very simple line drawings have elements of greatness. Im not just being nice here, I really think we made such a great decision going with the GRM community on this project. The combination of hard-core car guys AND the appreciation for what makes an efficient performance car design is really impressive. Big thanks to the GRM crew who are managing this program with us.

The design contest goes til June 1st and the submissions to date are causing me to want to go back to the well here and find some more prize money (maybe I can convince Solidworks or Hewlett Packard Corp to kick in some dough or goodies)... No promises here, just feeling very humbled by the stoke and creativity. Also frustrated that I don't have a development budget like a big car company... They need to spend more time with enthusiasts and less time with focus groups!

They just finished up a contest to design a military vehicle based on just a little more information than what is given here. I think that pictures should be the big topic here, lets see 'em. Mine are comming.

I should have been more clear, i meant for FFR, but after seeing the last comment that may not be true!:). I know of Local Motors and i saw their rally fighter in person in San Antonio back in Jan. Really cool stuff and from what i understand one of the founders came from the FFR pool of talent :)

Here's my preliminary quick sketch/E36 M3ty attempt. NA Miata and 356 Speedster inspired. Probably a bit long in the nose for a MR layout, but it could potentially utilise Bugeye WRX headlights.

My favouite so far is this one by 4cylndrfury:

Love the stocky proportions, and I could totally see that as a real car.

Local Motors got their start here in Wareham. We (Factory five) own a good chunk of the comapny (shares of stock) and three of our best guys work there now (2 engineers and a steel jig-tool maker expert). One guy asked us why we didn't go with Local Motors for the design competition (they do competitions all the time and would be able to host this one).

Truth is that their community (Local Motors) is ALL designers... we wanted racers and drivers and GRM type guys who knew subies and who BUILD rather than just designers. Make no mistake, designers are huge and needed, but the LM community is almost ALL designers and we wanted more hard-core car guys who drive and build and race. After seeing these submissions, I can tell you we chose well.
