I don't think it should change anything. In the art world, the old rule of thumb was that a piece of art needs to be at least 10% different than the work that inspired it. I am just curious if SW1's design is similar by chance. I always think that kind of stuff is neat.

There are cars here that are similar to the newer Porsche and I could blame their inspiration a little too obvious, if the car has a lot of differences that is enough for me , already the wheelbase in this case, Nevertheless, out of curiosity, I wondered if the author were the same, the rendering technique is fairly close This proposal is one of the most successful, but I can cite others which don't have this "déjà vu" side, and for me it's important to give to Factory Five its own personnality, not a replica/inspiration of a Porsche/Bizzarrini.

Yes, I'm saying that it doesn't matter, he changed it enough. I seriously doubt it was coincidence though. And we have no idea, like the other have said, it he was the original designer of the other car. And even if he isn't, it still doesn't matter.

I've made comments and posting in the FFR forum on this topic, I'll repeat myself here.

1. It is possible to make a nicely proportioned car based on the template, overlaying a Boxster/Caymen drawing should prove this to anyone - unless you hate the Boxster/Cayman.

2. People who choose to take 8" out of the wheelbase, lower the seating position by 10", move the driver 8" close to the front, lower the car, reduce the rear overhang and so forth, do so at their own risk. Yes, it is easier to make a better looking car this way, but the frame and powerplant is set, and not many buyers under 5'-6" tall.

Here are some drawings to clarify and help you see things my way. Should FFR recant and decide to go with a noncompliant design, I'll look silly, but it will not be the first time, so I'll get over it.

Thank you for your kind comments Kach22i they are much appreciated and I completely agree with what you are saying about sticking to the template. It was not difficult, I may not have a roof on mine but I don't think adding one would wreck the design either.

I have been reading through this gargantuan forum and I have seen loads of debates about how and why things should be done differently but I am more than happy to work with any package that I am given. Even if Factory Five had decided to make the design the size and shape of a Smart for Two or a Lincoln Continental I would have happily submitted an entry. Personally I feel privileged to be able to contribute to this design process.

I did study transport design and have lacked the confidence to really go for it and succeed this competition gave me that chance to finally show what I can do and following this I am going to dust off old projects to build my portfolio afresh.

Goodluck to all, lots of great designs and let's keep seeing more of the "700" there must be some incredible stuff we haven't even seen yet.

Here's mine as submitted. Crude, but I like working in pencil and I have no training with computer design software.

My intention was to use as much Subaru stuff as possible and Subie design cues. I also came up with a boxer inspired logo.

4cylndrfury & VTX: Thanks! I don't know that I'd call it cute, but then again it does use the headlights from a Dodge Neon- see below.

NOHOME: Great, I hope the judges agree ;) It doesn't use the WRX's windshield because the shape isn't great and since the donor cars will have been through some trama, there's a good chance it will have a cracked windshield anyway.

Instead I've used the MR-2's windshield and a myriad of other existing parts. The goal was a design that can cheaply be built as-is while still providing an OEM finished look. I've changed nothing from the Factory 5 plan.

I think there are some nice designs in this competition- especially SW1's- but I don't think they would fare well if produced for this chassis and budget. The seating position will have to be raised, the awkward full rollbar added, and the expensive custom lights simplified.

Maybe cute wasn't the right word. It's just not quite as aggressive looking as I prefer. It still looks great though and now that I can see some of the other views I like it even better than before. It's certainly a very well thought out design.

Dagoro- you have done a phenomenal job of incorporating existing aftermarket lighting into a design which, in the end, does not suggest the use of carryovers because they fit so naturally. Exemplary integration. Definitely my favorite of all entries revealed thus far, and it has just enough attitude to avoid the cute stigma. Best of luck!

Similarities can be drawn between many designs but that doesn't mean a designer is copying or even aware of another's work. In this case, the similarities are too generic and broad to be meaningful. I don't think SW1 based his design on the other car.

many vehicles in this thread a straight copies of existing vehicles, i commend those that tried something unique

In reply to dagoro: This is very well thought out, and one of the few designs (along with SW1, for example) that stick to the design goals by factory 5. As an engineer, I really like that.

I do think it would be better to have it's own lights, though, particularly the headlights. The headlights make such a big visual impact and these Neon lights look shoehorned in, and are very recognizable. Whenever I see an RV, I play a game with myself to identify what vehicles all of the lights came from. I think this car would look better with headlights adapted from the GTM.

Also, when air leaves the radiator, where does it go? Lastly, they may want to do this car without doors, and if they do, the frame of the car may block most of the natural door opening, so the bottom edge of the door is likely to be much higher than you show.

I'm only giving you constructive criticism because I think that there is a good chance of you winning, and I'd just like to throw in my 2 cents for potential refinement. Good luck.

I was influenced by a early 1960's Bizzarrini, my 7th entry full of curves and very retro. The wife loves it, said it was her favorite.

Hard not to copy what you love, but an acknowledged tribute ain't all that bad.

This is bad, sorry.........EDIT: Oops, sorry everyone, I was looking at the Bizzarrini here in the thread and had the link open which caused me to say the Bizzarrini looks like the Bizzarrini. No kidding - of course it's the same car. There are similarities to the SV1 design but far far less than lets say the Tesla to the Elise.

There are shades of the P578 in SW-1's design from certain selective angles, but nothing more than that.

The Bizzarrini a very trick concept, I wish I had something to do with it! I suppose it’s along the same thinking but the cars that really inspired my concept were the following:

Alfa Tipo 33: My father brainwashed me from a young age to love Alfas but this one in particular is my all time favorite, it has that classic 1960’s mid engine sensuous shape and still looks very aggressive.

McLaren F1: almost two decades old and still looks current: No car looks faster than this machine, intrigued by the combination of fluid forms and hard linear edges.

Alfa TZ3 by Zagato: beautiful 1960’s form cut up in a modern way with a couple modern touches as well. My goal was to do a mid engine version of this line of thinking.

Cars from the 60’s seem to appeal to both young and old; I just wanted to add a touch of today’s influence so it looks like a new machine. The larger the potential market the better chance FFR has of meeting their aggressive price point.

Lastly, just wanted to say congrats to everyone who participated in the contest……A lot of impressive concepts as well as a lot of insightful discussions! FFR has got to be happy.

I know this will come up, and there is much work to do, so I'll offer this trace-over for others to comment. I centered the wheels on the hubs, kept the same wheelbase.

Thanks to everyone who entered. We were absolutely blown away by both the quantity; over 700, and the quality... heck there are at least fifty or a hundred of these designs that I would want to build and own. Factory Five has promised us the first kit to build into a finished car, as a magazine project series. We are excited and as always, will keep you guys in the loop on this.

I want to thank Factory Five for trusting us to help execute this contest. I knew our readers would pull through. Thanks to you! Also I want to thank our world class panel of judges and especially Tom Heath on our team and Dave Lindsey at Factory Five, for handling the immense amount of logistics on this project.

This was very well done, and in all honesty, there were at least 25 designs I saw that I'd love to build. I'm already saving for my 818 kit!
