I am about to order a set of tires for my challenge firebird / SCCA CAM S10. They will be mounted on a set of 17x9.5 corvette wheels. I was going to run a square 275/40r17 at each corner.

Unfortunately none of the top tier 200 treadwear tires are available in that width. So the $800.00 question is which tire, rt615k or R1R?

The rival, rs3 and the re71r are all available in a 255/40r17 size. Would one of those be a better choice even though it will be stretched on the wheel and narrower?

This is relevant to my interests.

For absolute grip I think the R1R would be better and is a newer compound and design. With that said, I've run 3 sets of the Falkens and really think highly of them for an all around tire. For the Falkens plan on bringing a water sprayer as they get greasy when hot on Autox runs.

Could you run the Toyo R888 for 198 a tire for a 100treadwear tire?

The Falkens show up on a clearance page at Vulcan Tire for $138 each which would leave you some cheddar in the challenge budget. Clearance Falkens

I was originally going to run a set of hankook c71's but i plan to use these wheels and tires for SCCA CAM and that class requires 200 treadwear.

Ah I see. The Vulcan tire deal is the best for the Falkens that I've found but they will most certainly be new old stock so push them to tell you date codes on them before purchase.

So saying I choose the falkens (because I love them) would a 275 be faster than a 255 on a 9" wide wheel?

If you can roll with 255, the RR's are $125/corner (shipping included) at usedracingtires. 3/4 tread team lefovers. I have bought 2 sets of Cups there over the past couple years and gotten perfectly fine 3/4 scrubs each time.

actually, isn't a 255 about perfect for a 9.5" rim?

I would think the 255 in the newest flavor of UHP tire is faster than a generation older 275.

I ended up going with 255 RS3V2's on my mustang (17x9, calls for 275/40/17). You want a good compound over the size increase.

If ultimate speed is your goal, go with RE71R's in the 255, OR spend more money and buy a set of 18" wheels to get big rubber for it.

Decisions, decisions that is kind of what i was thinking. Maybe i have a set of 255/40r17 re71's in my future.

The Toyo R1R's need to be kept cool, usually by spraying them down with water after autocross runs. They're good tires, but need the maintenance.
