This gets my vote, though the autos aren't as good much more selection. Plus we own an '04 XT, love it.

I bet the V8's a hoot.
If you guys like those you should drive an FX50. Nothing that big and heavy should go that fast.
As Ian Hunter once said, "I've been wanting to do this for years." Realize that this is the interior view of an AWD Astro.

Looking at it, yes... but the thought of doing that swap has me in cold sweats...
My vote: early X5, I-6, manual trans. Could probably be found at the upper range of the budget.
If you can find one, the 'hot' WJ Grand Cherokee to get is an 02-04 Limited with the 4.7 H.O. Just as fast(if not faster) than the 5.9 ZJ's, stock for stock. Lots of mods exist for the 5.9's though, the aftermarket really took off for them. The WJ's are just a much nicer place to spend time. Those are the only two options I'd consider for a 'quick' SUV. Jeep sold tons of them and that means LOTS of parts for cheap. Good WJ's command a premium, but so do good 5.9 ZJ's. You can find them for under $5K easy, though. Intake/exhaust/tune wakes them up in a hurry. The ZJ bolt pattern makes it easier to find wheels and tires, the WJ's are 5x5 and really odd-you can really only use factory wheels from JK's and later Grand's. Both are dead nuts reliable and easy to work on. 70% of them suffer from owner neglect, though. Less than 4000lbs for both the ZJ and WJ, the ZJ has a 200lb advantage but you can really tell, the WJ's are a LOT more solid feeling. I'd get 22+mpg out of my WJ on the freeway, and I swear when I cut out the clogged cat, the sucker would've done mid-high 14's.
Durango's are just too damn fat.
Yeah, durangos dont belong in a 'fast suv' discussion at all. Even the 360 rt was not even REMOTELY fast. I have two friends that are brothers, they took their stock 360 durango and their stock 4.0/5spd cherokee to the track and the Cherokee was a half-second quicker. An awd durango r/t cant even get out of the 16s in the 1/4 mile.
I think an HO 4.7 grand cherokee is a contender.
A 5.6 Pathfinder would be much faster if you could find one in the price range.. doubtful. Those old Sy/Ty trucks are certainly quick but is that really the kind of thing you are looking for? They're pretty old and small. If it were me i'd pick the Forester XT.
We have a 2008 Armada, can't be had for $10k, but it's stupid fast. I always steal it from the wife and immediately turn off the traction control. Fun fun fun.
My next contender would be a V10 TDI VW Touareagagag thing. Heard with a simple tune they are insanely fast.
Find cheapest V8 SUV you can find and "bolt on" a S/C or turbo?
I know of a guy years ago that bolted on a Paxton NOVI to his Navigator and it was stupidly fast......

Like well prepped Miata on R-comps fast, several seconds faster than a Spec Miata. And is still rated to tow 5000lbs. It's quite an incredible piece of machinery.
Might be rated to tow that, but IIRC, the exhaust comes out directly in the middle which would require re-routing it to do it right.

Anddd I'm wrong. Looks like there is a factory tow hitch option.
Dirty little secret:
The 1FZ inline 6 motor that came in some of the early 90s Land Cruisers is very possibly as strong if not stronger than the fabled 2jz.
There are examples of these Land Cruisers in various parts of the world making over 1000hp to the wheels.
Calling it hilarious, obscene, and horrifying all at once is a bit downplaying of the situation.
If the $10k were to include modifications, that's where i'd cast my vote. Shop around for a beater Land Cruiser, strap the biggest turbo i could find on it, and roll.

Yes, it was the previous generation that couldn't tow.
It would be nice if we could keep the stuff that is BLATANTLY over the 10k cap out of this thread. Pie in the sky is the best way to prevent the OP from ever actually accomplishing anything fun.

Agreed, the thread was clearly for SUV's under $10K

Take a 3100 lb XJ Cherokee, add $1000.00 worth of engine mounts, radiator etc... + a wrecked LS1 Camaro or Firebird = Fast SUV
Not factory stock but 5 to 10 k would make you a real nice one.

It shouldn't, just have to realize the is more than one way to skin a cat (24 actually. . . I wrote a book).
Jags that Run engine mounts, and if you're going AWD you'll need to modify the oil pan by splicing two 4.3 pans together to make one long pan.
Interesting side note: AWD Astro's run a BW 4427 transfer case like the Typhoon/Syclone's.
Since we're kind of ignoring the upper price limit and the factory stock part of my post....

Probably not in the price range, but how about a Mazda CX-7 with Mazdaspeed 3 bits? Same motor, right?
Or an older 2 door Tahoe with all the mods?

The trick is to drop the subframe, do the swap etc, then put the body back on. Still not easy, but better than trying to stuff it in from the front..
