No kidding. Imagine the Gen III/IV you could build for 30k. It could blow the Ferrari piece out of the water in every way.
Except sound.
Not even that. You can buy flat-plane LS cranks. Also, C6R > F458 noises in ALMS...
I think the Ferrari sounds better than the vette, you know opinions and all. From personal experience sitting in Thunder Valley the C6R are just LOUD, not my thing.
In reply to Rusted_Busted_Spit: at that point you would still habe money in the budget to have Andy Nelson hand fab a bundle of snakes exhaust that would sound at least awesome ...and you could probably even get it platinum plated and still come in at less than rebuilding the Dancing Donkey engine
In reply to HappyAndy:
Money being a factor you are probably correct. But if I had Investment Banker money I would put an AM V12 into the Donkey car.

Wow I should pickup the ratty 360 spider near me for 60K, sell crank 27K, sell top for 32K, and seats for darn near 5K and build a challenge car.
You, Sir, win the internet.
Well..... I am sooooooper close to selling a crate motor to a customer in Florida. I knocked a "couple bucks" off the price of the motor to get it sold.
My argument to him is he's gonna need a set of crank bearings, rod bearings, seals, tensioners, timing belts, oil pan gasket, oil pan, ect. Why not get a fresh, 0-mile, crate motor for $XX,XXX and be done with it!

From what I have heard about Ferrari's take on "interchangeable parts" that's probably the wise plan.
My "Grassroots" approach to the Wealthy

Come on guys make a "WearyMicrobe" rule. Any prancing horse car brought to the challenge does not have to be purchased under the limit just brought there with the sale of parts.

I support this as long as you only get an exhibition class, which at that point, why the hell not. You can bring it and it will be allowed to run (you know it will) and even though you kick EVERYONES ass you just don't get the #1 prize. You will win our hearts!

I'll put down $100 that says the Ferrari wouldn't win overall.
I had a custom billet crank made to my specs by a company in the UK 2 years ago. It was just over 6000.00CDN

I don't appreciate you sharing the content of our conversation on a public forum such as this. Just for that, I'm buying my replacement motor from Ferrari directly!

I would say that is an accurate assumption.

I was thinking that after seeing the crate motor price. Plus, on your end, it seems it'd be better to have Ferrari warranty the assembled engine rather than your shop. The Volvo specialist we took the 850 to doesn't rebuild transmissions for this reason. Despite the eye-watering cost of a new trans, it's a better and more reliable deal. Too many unknowns going the rebuild path.

I buy all my replacement engines from Ferrari. Everything else is so low brow.
GTR engines are around $28k...transmissions are $17k...
So not that I am complaining about the price but 12K gets you a factory motor that had been pulled form a crashed 360.
Why in the world would you go to the factory. Bet I could find a clean warrantied short block for less then 8K.

Well that's just ridiculous. Is it made out of gold or something? That just about seals the deal for me. I have always had a hankering for a used Ferrari but with prices like that for parts.............forget it, I'll stick with cars/parts I know and can actually purchase.
Offer him a few bucks for the "bad" engine. You might be able to retire if you sell off a few of the used parts.
Serious Q for the new engine over a rebuild. Don't these guys wet their pants over matching #'s etc for when this thing is worth serious money in 50 years than the pocket lint now? His grand kids may regret the new engine at that point unless he keeps it in stock for a future rebuild.
the 360 will never be worth "serious money". They made way too many of them for them to ever be truly collectible.

Yep they're gonna be the cheap basket-case Ferraris of the future.
360 will never bring big cash, they are the mondial of this generation.
But they are crazy easy, in Ferrari land, to maintain and good 6 speed coupes will keep there value for a while longer.
Once 430's start to really drop in price as the 458's get out of the must have stage then I swear I am going to just on a clean low mileage 00' coupe with a manual and good history.
