Did you ever figure out what is wrong with that trans? I knew it lost all forward motion, but I still don't know why.
Coilovers from Tein that fit the Mazda 121 reportedly fit the Festiva. Google CWS Tuning for lots of other info.
Forgot this, the Festiva is indeed a Kia Pride in drag. If you want to get super ghetto on the inevitable swap, you could probably find the b series out of a Kia Sephia (1.8, 122 hp) for almost nothing, what with badge snobbery and all. It's supposed to bolt right in and it's cams away from being a 1.8 Miata motor.

Kia Pride = Ford Festiva = Mazda 121.
I was originally looking for one of these to be my school's racecar project before settling on the Daewoo. Haven't decided whether I made the right choice or not.

It IS a BP.
You can find the motor in 91-96 Escort GT/Tracer LTS/Escort LX-E, first gen Protege LX, earlier Kia Sephias, and Spectras.
If you're paying more than $200 for one, you're doing it wrong.
But in a FWD car, given that the work for a KL swap has already been done, the BP becomes redundant and archaic. The KL is a better motor, and doesn't give up much weight to the BP, either.

Regarding brakes and wheel "upgrades": Unless you have a hard finding rims and the brakes already suck with the little power from the stock motor, I'd be weary of going bigger just to go bigger. Bigger (read: Heavier) brakes and rims will take some out of your acceleration. Thats mostly why people put light weight flywheels and drive shafts on their cars.

I LOL'd hard on that one,
Yes, you can use coilovers for a 121 if you can find them for that listing, the easier way to go is for an early model Demio, that is what I had on mine, Teins for a Demio I think they were HFs.
The reason for the Aspire brake swap is more then just bigger brakes, the disks pop right off, on the stock festiva they need to be pressed off. Also the festys are solid front, the Aspires are ventilated. They also use a more common Mazda/ford brake pad. BTW the Aspire rear brakes are drums too, just an inch larger. You are not really saving much in terms of weight, and the bonuses outweigh the negatives. Also the Aspire track gets you an inch wider track as well, so if you roll the fender lips you can add a fatter tire. The 4x100 wheel pattern is much more common then the festy pattern nowdays too.
Added plus, as cheap as an Aspire brake swap is, it is almost stupid not to do it.

Oh I almost forgot, the Aspire rear beam also has an integrated rear swaybar, helps a lot on a FWD car. In addition to that, I also welded some bosses to mine, and made different thickness rear bars that I could change out to adjust the rear stiffness even more.

Swapped over the festy trans. One of those "This'll only take a minute" jobs...until we found the axles were stuck. I mean berkeleying STUCK...as in two bent pry bars, one broken pry bar, and one broken air chisel stuck. Finally pulled the entire trans. w/axles and were able to get a cheater bar on a pry bar and pop 'em loose.
Unfortunately, after all that, we were all tired and frustrated, and it was getting dark. Didn't have an alignment tool and eyeballed it. Apparently, our eyes ain't so good.

Well put it this way.

The camera car is an Escort with a turbo BP in it. (1.8 DOHC that has also been thrown around in here.) It's on 8psi, or 18. Details are hazy. But it's a low 14s car.
The Wagon (WAGON!!!!!), has a stock KLDE in it, running 5psi on an ebay turbo kit.
With me so far?
Cut the wheelbase in half. Lose 800lbs. You've got your Festy. On megasquirt that same setup that's in the wagon should be good for 12-14psi.

You've all heard about it, now you too can own the dream! Surprise your friends, amaze your neighbours! Buy my sister's Festiva today! You know you want to.

Buy that, and this:
http://www.mx6.com/forums/fs-engine-mechanical/240711-oh-millenia-kl-mx3-trans-few-other-parts-fs.html
And be well on your way to having one of the most hilariously overpowered cars to EVER show up at the Challenge.
I'll vouch for the seller of those parts, and let everyone know that he's selling for an unheard-of cheap price. That same motor (KLG4) has been in the 11s in an MX3 under boost, full leather interior. Think of the shock and awe that your Festiva would garner.
PS: $100 for the Ass-pyre if anyone on the board wants it. Grab it quick before it's squishy-squishy time. Pretty much good for the motor only +scrap when you're done with it. Has festiva trans but will need (at least) proper clutch alignment. It is a roller, but has NO brakes, and the hubs are on the festiva.
Oh, and if you spend a little time with it, you can swap the front seat backs and bottom cushions/upholstery from an 80's 323 onto the Festy bases to get yourself some actually usable seats. Took me about an hour for the first one and 20 minutes for the second.
Thanks for all ideas. I am actually excited to get this thing this weekend. I've been talking to all my friends and they are keeping their eyes out for donor cars and other challenge priced goodies. A few have even expressed interest in forming some sort of team . Though I know that every road is paved with good intentions and having the past experience of having builds never materialize, I chose a project that can be built and hauled myself if (when?) everybody else flakes.
Back to B-series donors - Is there any pros or cons in choosing a 1.6 B6T over a BP 1.8 or vice versa? My thought is that a B6T while already turboed is not that much more powerful than a N/A 1.8 BP (132 vs. 127).
My feelings are a 1.8 is a better (cheaper too?) starting point for making some real power later on when the time comes to turbo it instead of trying to get more out of the smaller motor. Am I wrong?
I should also just add too that while I love the idea of Sho/KL and other powered variants, this car will probably see daily driver duty someday. So with that in mind I'm aiming for a tried and true swap that is dead nuts reliable. Sitting on the interstate at 2am broken down is not my idea of fun.
I'm not an expert, but let me know if you need help getting parts. The Kia Pride is the best selling car in the history of S. Korea, so if you can't track something down, I probably can.
Funny you mention that. As I was napping earlier I had this weird dream that I acquired some Pride badges and painted the car a rainbow theme for the Challenge complete with a phallic like shifter.
Thank god I woke up shortly after that.
That would be one hell of a theme
Thank goodness for AdBlock...
And for those who need it, I brought extra!

I'm glad you guys could make it so far without me!
Marty, listen to me. B6T engine/trans/wiring harness from an 88-89 323 GT, motor mounts from http://www.festivamotorsport.com/performance/transdrive/ptransaxle.html, axles from a Merc Capri turbo, brake stuff all the way around from an Aspire and rotors and calipers from an Escort GT for the front, whatever engine management you want to run (and it will be waaaaaay easier to install with the 323 wiring harness), hog out the wheel wells and put on the fattest berkeleying wheels and tires you possibly can. I had 225/50/14s on my car and it needed them.
Now having said that, I put a 1.8 BPT into my car, but it was a humongus pain in the ass and you can get almost as much power out of the 1.6 with not nearly as much headache. Any other questions PM me!
Carry on!

B6T vs. BP. Bolt ons vs. bolt ons, the B6T will be faster by a decent margin.
Turbo the BP, and the bias goes wildly to the other side. The best part is that turbo'ing a BP can be done for PEANUTS. As long as you don't get too wild, you can almost literally plug in a BP-T ECU and call it a day. No REAL tuning necessarily required.
This is a timely thread, given that my coworker brought his Festiva to work for the first time yesterday. We had a good poke at it - interesting seeing the little SOHC 1.3 variant of that engine we know so well.
We mounted a set of my old 185/60-14 tires on 14x7 wheels, it looks very cool.

The VivaFestiva is now in my garage as of this afternoon. Wish me luck that I don't run outta beer during this build.
I'm going to start tearing into this thing on Wednesday. I'll probably start a build thread with lots of pics when some actual work starts to happen.
