Will the rear axle form a '75 Spider fit a '79? They look different as far as how they are made, but the suspension looks the same. Just want something that will bolt in and work, not concerned about being 'correct'.

Panhard swap and driveshaft swap required as well...

azruss on that board has a 71 in his 79 IIRC...

If you need a new axle.. try to find the proper one. The later model was reported to be weaker and is more a mongrel parts bin special

So the early "3rd member" style is the good one? Car is a '79, one of the bolts on the ring backed out and things got broken...fast. Not my car, just trying to help fix it.

not sure what you mean by "third member".. if you are referring to the torque tube ones.. those are weak. The strongest was what the B and C series spiders had up till mid 79. You can tell because the differential will come out as a complete unit from the FRONT of the diff

edit you know.. I should read the original post before adding. You are on the right track with the mid 70s diff.. something else to watch out for, those diffs might have a much higher ratio. I think mine as a 4.40 to 1 ratio

Ring and pinion failures were common on the 2 litre style rear axle with the separate diff cover. It was not unusual for us to just buy a used early rear and stick it in a car to make it go for a customer, because for awhile you couldn't even buy the parts (and they are no fun to install). The transverse bar is different but I think it's only because it's made to fit around the larger pumpkin, not that the length varies. The lower shock mounts are different on the two assemblies but if you get the mount brackets it doesn't matter. The driveshaft thing has been debated over the years; I don't remember ever swapping one but then I wasn't usually doing the work, either. The trailing arms are fully interchangeable and I used the 2 litre ones on my small bumper car because the bushings were larger and the early ones tended to rust internally and would sometimes fail.

Ratios vary depending on the car, trans (stick or auto) and the whim of the factory. Brava rear diffs are the same but ONLY the diff; the axle assy complete won't work.
