914's suck! What a terrible car...
A six conversion intrigues me, and I would need a smaller diameter steering wheel (the case on most Porsches). I hate the Type 4 engine, it's a truck motor. A flat six? Yes...It completely transforms the car.

I won't pretend that isn't very nice, but honestly, at that point, aren't you just using the 914 for its styling?
Yeah, I honestly don't get it either. When the new owner started it was a very bad-ass and sorted original 914-6 autocross racer that was all Porsche. I think there's maybe 40% of the floorpan, the targa bar, and the aftermarket flares left!

At least the X1/9 rusts where you can see it and not in places that cause the car to collapse upon itself.
I have had both. Neither of mine had major rust issues. Honestly, I don't know which I would go for if I had the chance to do either again. The 914 was a more pleasant daily summer driver. The Fiat was better to drive hard. Neither were especially fast, or handled especially well stock, but they were both mildly exotic and garnered attention at gas stations. Little kids love the 914. Adult men like the X1/9.
That BAD A$$ X1/9 belongs to Johannes Graversen. Here is a video of his car in action, he gets the jump on all kinds of awesome race cars, except for one 911 but watch what happens. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eV1t5O2xmcI&feature=related that being said these are all out race cars we can bench race all day long, but when it comes right down to it it's all about money and your budget, it's way cheaper to restore and race an X1/9 than a 914.
What sort of grid is that? There is a stock looking MKI GTI at the back of the pack.
I've been thinking x1/9 for awhile and think I may do it....or a 944.
I just know that they tried to make a rally car out of the X... and it was faster than the stratos. But ultimately, as Fiat never wanted or liked the X.. they went with the 131.
I also seem to recall that R&T put wider stickier tyres (that fit under the fenders) on an X with some shocks, springs, and rollbars (the car has no anti-roll bars stock) and pulled 1g
Tube chassis race car that can accommodate Fiat and 914 fiberglass shells like Barbie changes outfits?
WIN
There's a quite a few Youtube videos of that X1/9 destroying the competition. I believe it runs a 1.4 liter Uno Turbo engine, which is basically a stock X1/9 engine with a factory turbo on it, but of course, with an absurd number of mods in this case. In the non-road racing arena, there's Momi's (in Israel) X1/9 which sports a Lancia Integrale engine (similar in concept to the Abarth 2000 X1/9 from 1974, but modernized). His 'creation' is rumored to sit somewhere north of 600 hp.
Answer: Yes.
Those are some sweet examples. Do like the 914 for subaru compatibility, but I've heard of rotary and k20 X1/9's on the pages of our favorite magazine.
And why isn't the Mk1 MR2 in the comparo? With turbo 4age, 3sgte, or v6 options for fairly easy swap.... a very good option.

I can imagine the guy in the 911.
"How is that antique passing me?~!?!?!?!?!"
Cool racing concept, kind of like bracket drags. Run what you brung...and bring some extra weight with you.

Steady grasshopper, there is more to come
In reply to mad_machine: GRM did a comparison article on these cars .
I'm game! Let's do anther one, my car is stock except for shocks and tires (tires were 5 year old Yokohama a048 185/60-13 on 13x5.5 wheels) ( I only have 75hp ). I was only .611 seconds slower than a stock MR2 with shocks (130 hp ) and a brand new set of Hoosier 225/45-13 autox tires on 13x8 wheels. I haven't had a Fiero or stock 914 bet me yet.
