The "Longest Relationship Thread"

http://grassrootsmotorsports.com/forum/off-topic-discussion/show-us-your-long-term-relationship/100338/page1/

Led to me digging up these old pictures

Which led to a craigslist ad:

Hungary Bill on Craigslist said: A few years ago (about 3 to be exact) I sold my 1987 Toyota 4x4 to a gentleman near Lake McMurray (Mount Vernon). I'm hoping to reach him in an effort to buy the vehicle back. At the time of sale it was your run of the mill 22r, 5spd, 4x4, with roughly 300,000 on the clock. I rattle canned it tan (mostly) and had installed bucket seats. I was overseas at the time and couldn't stand the thought of her just rotting at my grandparents house so I let her go. I'm back now, and I miss her like crazy. The picture was taken pre-rattle can paint job. But if you have her, you'll know it's the one I'm talking about. Thanks, -Bill

Which I honestly didn't have very high hopes for...

but (and I still can't believe this) it led to a voicemail on my phone when I got home yesterday!!!

The guy who bought it from me sold it to someone else, but he wants me to call him today at noon. I have my fingers crossed

That's impressive. Thinking back on things, there are old vehicles I wish I was able to keep, but there was always a good reason for replacing them.

I bought back to my 1990 Miata after I sold it in 2001. Only lasted a summer and I sold it again. Do I miss it? Yeah. But it was not the same after someone else had been farting in the seats for three years and the memories don't come back with it I recently found out it was up for sale again and I took a pass this time.

That is a bit of a concern of mine (will it be as good as I remember it?). I have confidence though.

That and I loathe the vehicle I'm driving at the moment

The truck has been painted black. Aftermarket carb and exhaust installed. It was then traded for a dirtbike (2006 Kawasaki KX 250f)

The search continues!

Me too. The guy told me it was a young kid who was getting his first truck and I probably wouldn't have much luck getting it away from him. But what fun would it be to quit now?

Edit!!!! I just found the VIN number! It was still saved in USAA's records. I thought I remembered seeing it when I added the Mustang to the insurance. Score!

Those trucks are the e36m3, I hope it works out. I've thought in moments of desperation about getting rid of my hilux, but I'm really thankful to have kept the old girl. I bought her of the parents (who bought her new) when I got my license at 16, in july I'll turn 37.

Good luck!

I sold my gigantic K5-turned-pickup and wanted it back sooooo badly.

Then I saw half of it in someone's back yard and the other half on a flatbed at a repair shop.

It was like a funeral I swear!

every EVERY time i see a car that i once owned, it's always in worse condition. usually much worse. just once i'd like to sell a car to someone who takes better care of it than i do. while i regret a sale here and there, i don't recall ever wanting one back.

This deserves its own thread.

The truck is in Guatemala.

Looks like it's time for a new truck. I'm thinking one with a straight body, no mods, and I'll take better care of it this time (less kid/play stuff, more work/adult stuff)

It seems like most of my used vehicles get shipped overseas these days. I sold a 1976 Honda CB750 and the guy shipped it to Japan. Now my Toyota?

Interesting...

What do you do to your vehicles that makes them flee the country after you sell them?

Sooooo the Guatemala e-mail was a troll. But I didn't want to dig up the thread without the prospect of closure.

That changed today.

So I asked Guatemala guy for more info and got a weird reply, then nothing. I initially took the ad off craigslist but relisted it a day later. Then Al called. Turns out Al traded the dirtbike to the guy I sold it to. He then traded the truck for a jeep. He had the person's name and city, but no contact info.

So I went clepto on this new person's google info. Sent him a text, sent him a letter, then silence. At 7:56pm today I ignored a phone call that went to voicemail.

My search is over, I found my truck. I go for a look tomorrow.

I'm berkeleying stoked!

Went to see her. She's just as beautiful as I remember. Dead now, due to a blown head gasket, but I think she's savable. Pictures to follow.

New owner never got my letter or text. His son saw the craigslist ad while searching for a Wrangler! Oddly enough, the person I sold the truck to saw my ad while looking for another Toyota 4x4.

I think a head gasket on a 22r can be done in a couple hours. Are you buying it back?
